The deputy speaker of the Slovak parliament and head of the ruling Slovak National Party, Andrej Danko, must pay a fine of up to one thousand euros, i.e. roughly 25 thousand crowns. At the same time, he was banned from driving for two years. The reason is an accident in January, in which a car damaged a traffic light in Bratislava and drove away. He told reporters on Friday.

Danko promised his involvement in community service earlier, and he finally did so during the ongoing session of the Chamber of Deputies. As its vice-chairman, he is entitled to a chauffeured vehicle.
After Danko’s accident, the prosecutor’s office initiated a criminal prosecution in the case for damaging and endangering the operation of a public utility facility. She subsequently decided that Danko would not be charged and forwarded the case to the traffic inspectorate of the police for misdemeanor proceedings.
Danko did not submit to a breath test for alcohol until 15 hours after the nighttime accident. The politician was not found to have consumed alcohol, and Danko himself claimed that he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. According to the media, the license plate of Danko’s car was left at the scene of the collision and an oil trail led to his garage.
