The number of victims of Monday’s Russian attack on the southern Ukrainian port of Odesa rose to five, one of the 32 injured died in hospital. Oleh Kiper, the head of the administration of the Odesa region, announced this on Telegram on Tuesday. Footage released by Ukraine’s top prosecutor shows an attack by Russians against a residential area of Odessa with cluster munitions. Its projectiles were located 1.5 kilometers from the explosion site.
“The death toll from yesterday’s Russian missile attack has risen to five. A man, born in 1960, died in hospital,” Kiper said. According to him, more than 20 injured people remain under the care of doctors, four of them in a very serious condition, including a four-year-old girl, eight of them are in a serious condition.
The mayor of Odessa, Hennadij Trukhanov, said on Monday that three women and one man had died. Kiper previously said that in addition to the direct deaths from the Russian strike, a man who suffered a stroke during the missile attack also died.
Photos released by Ukrainian authorities on Monday showed the burning Palace of Students, nicknamed Harry Potter’s Castle. The roof of the ornate building, which Reuters said serves as a private law academy, is almost completely destroyed after the attack.
Ukrainian media earlier said the damage was caused when Ukrainian defenses shot down a Russian missile over the port city. According to Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk, it was a Russian Iskander-M ballistic missile with a cluster warhead.
One of the law school students, who identified herself as Marija, said she saw the interception of the missile with her own eyes.
“It was right in front of me. The door flew open and the glass shook. And then I saw this,” the student told Reuters, pointing in the direction of the burning building.
