Britain has had a grueling super election week. London, Manchester and other large cities or regions chose new mayors after four years, hundreds of mandates in municipal councils were distributed across England, and by-elections to the House of Commons were held in the Blackpool South district at the same time. However, it was not only about regional politics – the elections also show how the parties currently stand in national politics.

It can be said that the results speak clearly. The Labor Party controlled the majority of the vote with a really big overview. The most obvious winner is London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who received the vote of confidence for a historic third term. The vote boosted the already strong and nationally visible mayors Andy Burnham of Manchester and Steve Rotherham of Liverpool. On top of that, Labor won the aforementioned parliamentary seat and gained hundreds of new representatives.

Conversely, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party experienced its worst election day in decades. They maintained their positions only in their biggest strongholds and did not claim any significant success. After the experience of last year’s regional elections and failures in almost all supplementary parliamentary elections, conservative politicians were preparing for the depressing days in advance. While there were hopeful opinions before the vote that the results could break Sunak’s neck, expectations of an even darker future
