German police in Berlin dispersed several hundred pro-Palestinian protesters who occupied the courtyard of the Free University of Berlin on Tuesday morning. According to the AP agency, which brought the information, the protests were inspired by current events at American universities.
Demonstrators erected about twenty tents on the spot, around which they formed a human chain. Most of them had their faces covered with medical masks or scarves and shouted slogans like “Viva, viva Palestine”.
According to the university management, the protesters refused any form of communication. The police, who were called, first asked the students to leave the campus. There were several skirmishes, a number of protesters were escorted out of the area by the police. In several cases, they also used pepper spray.
A similar protest was also dispersed by the Dutch police on Tuesday morning. Around 125 protesters set up a tent city on the campus of the University of Amsterdam.
Protests at American universities
Police made arrests Monday night in a group camped out on the New York University (NYU) campus. Dozens of students were arrested for anti-Semitic speech at Yale, Columbia University canceled face-to-face classes.
