COMMENTARY / Trump’s intended vice-presidential nominee, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, has published a memoir. In it, she did not fail to boast that she shot her 14-month-old pointer named Cricket because of “uncontrollability”. The dog was said to be “useless”.

At the moment when the mentioned facts became more widely known, the alleged author of the memoirs also discovered something new. Namely, that she did not accurately estimate the effect of the story on the American public, who strangely did not begin to think of her as a charming tough girl due to her irascibility and relentlessness. Not only did Noemová become the target of harsh satire, but she also soon acquired the status of an extremely toxic person, from whom politicians and public figures distanced themselves en masse, regardless of political orientation. The nomination for vice president failed. A rare positive consequence of the discovery of the tragedy was the increased interest of Americans in adopting abandoned dogs.

However, dogs were extremely popular in the United States a long time ago. Of course, not everyone is able to master cynological skills and raise a dog according to their wishes. Different breeds show their peculiarities and different individuals of the same breed have an individual color. But none of this is usually a reason to kill a pet that hasn’t quite “made it out”. Unless you are a ruthless manipulative psychopath.

Some dogs have gotten a bad reputation, but most of the blame falls on the owner. They lacked the patience to subject an animal to consistent, consistent training to earn its obedience. They didn’t allow him enough movement and left them tied up too often. They didn’t understand when the adolescent puppy “got angry” and tried to get a higher position in the pack than he deserved. (This was probably also the case with the unfortunate Cricket.) They underestimated the innate qualities of most pit bulls or dobermans, and someone paid the price. They carelessly coughed up the muzzle, not to mention the lead…

It just happens that some people can’t handle a dog to one degree or another. But it only says a little about the dog itself.

MAGA tough guy intervenes

In addition to the fact that the book of the former future vice president encouraged fellow citizens to adopt, it may have brought another benefit. It also offered a powerful metaphor to help understand the current attitudes of the extreme fringes of the American political scene.

Donald Trump and his supporters clearly consider the democratic rules prescribed by the US Constitution to be a pain in the ass. Trump’s authoritarian cult looks up to Chinese, Russian or North Korean “strong” leaders who do not have to be bound by any legality or constitutionality, any restrictive procedures.

The goal of the MAGA cult is not the restoration of American democracy, as those who, for example, only agree with the Trumpists on some of the secondary topics like to declaim. It is quite the opposite: the very things that the prudent Founding Fathers tried to avoid while writing the democratic constitution have become the object of the highest admiration. The vanishing point of Trump’s efforts is to gain the absolute obedience of his followers, from the point of view of the approach to the exercise of power, there is room for unlimited arbitrariness and impunity.

Ironically, it is the Republican Party, which in modern times has always been more wary of the powers of the central government, that is now backing the dictator’s admirers to return to the White House.

Deluded conservative Christians, angry rednecks, and other pro-Trump groups have no idea how close they are to the written-off Kristi Noem. The democratic political system operating since 1776 has no value in their vision of the world. Without thinking about the consequences for themselves and their loved ones, if this year’s elections really were the last, they show a willingness to let the democratic political culture die without mercy.

However, many cannot even imagine the changes that may occur. They foolishly believe that while the usurper will deprive the established political, legal and security elite of their influence, their own civil rights will remain intact in the process. On average, poor knowledge of history means that historical cases testifying to the true nature of authoritarian eras cannot correct current political fantasies.

Long live Palestine, even if the world were to burn

Then we have another group, this time left-wing “accelerationists”. Their basic shared idea is that things have become too “stagnant” in politics and they are said to be unbearable in this form. That is why it is said that history needs to be “driven” and get it out of a deadlock. The happy ending will appear on its own shortly after the situation inevitably worsens. The basic illusion then is that extremists have discovered the “real” direction of history and can rely on this knowledge to formulate political tactics and strategies.

The supposed privileged knowledge of the program of the history machine seemingly obviates the need to judge each policy primarily by its practical consequences. A guaranteed historical twist is supposed to be lurking in the background.

If American democracy does not support the “emancipation” efforts of Hamas terrorists and their supporters, if it contributes to the “genocide” in Gaza, it means to fanatical leftists that this political system does not deserve to survive.

Therefore, they intend to participate with all their might in its destruction and destruction, believing that precisely by the catastrophic deterioration of the situation they will open the way for the final victory of the right cause. They are very clearly articulating the goal of punishing Biden for not taking orders from them by orchestrating his fall election loss.

However, the reality is somewhat more complicated. If Biden does not defend his post in the White House in the fall, it will be mainly because of centrist voters, not because of the numerous left-wing extremists. And the president can win back these centrist supporters even more likely if he shows much more determination in maintaining public order in the next academic semester than before.

However, the miscalculations of the political commissars of American universities do nothing to change their fundamental agreement with the Trumpists, which is also manifested in the mutual support of both camps. Both tribal groups suffer from a tendency to treat the inherited democratic tradition like Kristi Noem with her pointer.

Rather than admit their own inability to play well by the rules, they would rather destroy that which convicts them of impotence.

Both extremists are ready to snap at democracy like a dog.
