The Russians will strike at the heart of Ukraine if they recharge Chasiv Yar, the governor of the Donetsk region, Vadym Filashkin, warned in an interview for Sky News.
When asked what danger threatens Ukraine and the world if the entire Donbas falls under Russian control, Filashkin replied that “the enemy will move on. If, God forbid, that happens, the enemy will advance further into the central territory of our country”.
But he added in one breath that the Ukrainians will do everything – everything possible and impossible to prevent the Russians from succeeding. He declared that the Ukrainian army would do everything to return to the borders of its country in 1991.
The governor said some 2,500 civilians have been killed and nearly 5,000 injured in his region alone since Russia launched its all-out invasion in February 2022. “Words to describe all the anger we feel probably haven’t been invented yet,” he added.
The commander of a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who goes by the call sign Steve, described the situation in Chasiv Yar as “brutal”. “It’s very brutal. Yes. As brutal as you can imagine. And even more.”

Speaking in near-fluent English with an American accent, he said Ukraine needed much more precision weapons from its Western partners, according to Sky News. “That would change the war, completely, because we know where (the Russians) are. Exactly. We just need a gun to destroy them. That’s it,” he added.
The UK Ministry of Defense (MOD) reported that the rate of Russian attacks increased by 17 percent between March and April 2024, and that more than 75 percent of reported ground attacks took place in the directions of Chasiv Yar, Avdijivka and Marinka. The UK Ministry of Defense noted that the number of Russian attacks at Chasiv Yar increased by 200 percent between March and April. The British information was referred to by the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The speed of the Russian advance is also said to be due to the fact that the soil in the east of Ukraine has dried up and it was already possible to move on to military operations.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the army of defenders of the attacked country knows what the Russian aggressors are preparing for. According to Zelensky, the collection of information is absolutely essential. “The Kraken unit of the defense intelligence of Ukraine deserves special thanks for the fight these days. I am grateful to you, guys!” said Zelensky.
He also paid his respects to the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsolaová.
“It is very symbolic that today, on Europe Day, our interview with journalists was interrupted by an airstrike. This is exactly what the Russian Nazis want to replace life not only in Ukraine, but in our entire Europe, wherever their terrorist attacks reach. It will not intimidate, or break Ukraine, or break all those who bravely and resolutely help us defend life. Madam President of the European Parliament is exactly the type of leader who has been with us since the first days of this war and has always supported us as we needed. Today, Roberta and I discussed what further political and defensive steps are needed to ensure that we truly resist all attacks and thwart Russia’s offensive and destabilizing plans,” the president said.
