Legend to the drawer. Mercedes introduced the electric G-Class

--

The electric “gečko” is basically just a new engine for the current and recently modernized generation of off-road. This means that it shares an honest frame and characteristic bodywork with the combustion variants.

At a glance, the details are different, it has a different mask with more coverage, which will at least slightly improve the aerodynamics of the shoe box. There may be a smaller cover for the charging cables on the stern instead of the reserve. The interior is the same as the rejuvenated version, so it has a touch screen and is no different from regular gelandewagens.

Electricity specially for the terrain

The high-voltage lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 116 kWh is integrated into the ladder frame, ensures a low center of gravity and enables a range of up to 473 kilometers according to the WLTP. To protect it from water and dirt, it is housed in a twist-resistant case.

When charging with alternating current, for example from a wallbox, the maximum charging power is up to 11 kW. For fast charging with direct current, there is a fast charging system on board with a power of up to 200 kW. In this case, the charging time from 10 to 80% of the battery capacity is around 32 minutes.

The chassis protection is made of a mixture of materials, which also includes carbon. The latter contributes to an increase in rigidity compared to parts made of steel or aluminum. It also provides long-term corrosion protection and saves weight. The lower protection panel is 26 millimeters thick, weighs 57.6 kilograms and is attached to the ladder frame with more than 50 steel screws.

The car is powered by four independently controlled motors located near the wheels. They are also integrated into the ladder frame and develop a maximum total power of 432 kW and a maximum torque of 1164 Nm.

It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h. But more importantly, Mercedes obviously tried to squeeze the best out of the electric drive for off-road traction.

Mercedes says that in cooperation with the ESP system and the central drive control system, the torque is distributed to exactly those wheels where the electric G-Class needs to provide traction at the given moment.

The novelty also uses torque vectoring to create virtual differential locks. This technology makes it possible to accurately dose torque to individual wheels.

There is also a function that replaces the reduction gearbox or the G-turn mode, thanks to which the car can turn on the spot like a tank, and the wheels on one side turn in the opposite direction than the other.

The ladder frame was modified and strengthened for the electric model, while retaining the combination of independent front suspension with double wishbones and rigid rear axle. The rear axle is of the De Dion type and has been completely redesigned. The car uses adaptive suspension similar to the combustion models.

The numbers that the electric car can handle in the field speak for themselves. With a wading depth of 850 mm, it surpasses the combustion version. It can handle up to 100% climbing on suitable surfaces, the ground clearance between the axles is at least 250 mm, it can handle stable driving in a side slope of up to 35°, the front approach angle is 32°, the rear approach angle is 30.7° and the crossing angle is 20.3° .

The car manufacturer has not yet announced the price, the car should go on sale this year.
