Heat pump? No mistake: 5 reasons why people shouldn’t buy it

--

Government programs and subsidy incentives encourage the installation of heat pumps as an ecological and economical alternative to traditional heating methods. But is a heat pump really the best choice for every home and family? In this article, we look at five important factors that you should consider before deciding on a heat pump.

High initial investment

The purchase of a heat pump represents a significant financial burden. Prices range from CZK 200,000 to CZK 1 million, depending on the type and performance, which is several times more than a gas boiler. Even with a subsidy, the investment can reach hundreds of thousands of crowns. Not everyone can afford it.

Lower heating comfort

Heat pumps work with lower heating water temperatures (approx. 65°C) than gas boilers (75°C). This can mean slower heating and less comfort on cold winter days. In older and poorly insulated houses, the heat pump may be undersized and not able to sufficiently heat the entire household.

Rapid development of technologies

The technology of heat pumps is constantly developing, and with it their efficiency and prices. There is a high probability that in a few years, much more powerful and cheaper models will be available than today. Buying a heat pump now can mean that in a few years you will have outdated technology.

Not suitable for all types of houses

To install an air-to-water heat pump, you need enough outdoor space to place the outdoor unit. With a ground-to-water heat pump, it is necessary to drill a hole into the ground, which is not always possible. In apartments with limited space, installation of both types can be problematic.

Savings are not guaranteed

The actual energy savings and operating costs with a heat pump vary depending on many factors, such as the type and age of the house, the pump model chosen, energy prices, etc. In practice, even with a subsidy, the return on investment may stretch over many years. In the case of replacing a modern gas boiler, the heat pump may mean an increase in operating costs despite the subsidies.

Other factors to consider

  • The noise level of the outdoor unit of the heat pump.
  • Necessity of regular maintenance and service inspections.
  • Impact on the environment (e.g. compressor noise, cooling medium).
  • Availability and quality of service services in the given location.

Remember that the heat pump is not omnipotent and does not work perfectly everywhere. It is always necessary to consider all aspects and the individual situation of a given house and family.

Conclusion

Heat pumps undoubtedly represent an ecological and, in the long term, an economically advantageous heating alternative. But it is necessary to carefully consider all the above factors and make sure that the heat pump is really suitable for your house and your financial situation. Before you decide to buy, compare different models, contact experts and have an individual calculation drawn up.
