One of the big topics today is whether and how seniors should be able to drive motor vehicles. Today, the situation is such that practically everyone who wants to drive, even at a very advanced age. Drivers over 90 are no exception.
The cases are unambiguous
However, people are noticing that these drivers are more and more often causing really serious accidents. There are several risk factors, such as loss of orientation, insufficient attention, or a certain acute event. At the same time, imagine that such a driver is driving on a county road, where he is really close to oncoming vehicles. One wrong maneuver with the steering wheel is all it takes and a huge problem is in the works.
Older drivers who drive in the opposite direction, even on the highway, are no exception. Recently, an 89-year-old driver drove approximately twenty kilometers without noticing that the police were trying to stop him. Such a person clearly had no business behind the wheel.
Within the European Union, it is already being discussed that the checks of driving ability at an advanced age would be significantly expanded, which could also include certain additional tests that would be tied to the extension of the driving license. People would have to complete them after the age of 70. However, it will take quite some time before everything is approved.
It doesn’t have to be perfect
But one thing could be done relatively quickly. First of all, the state should launch a campaign in which it would draw attention to the risks associated with driving at a very advanced age. It should help people understand that it might not be a good idea anymore.

At the same time, it is suggested that seniors mark their vehicles with a special sign. It could be, for example, a sticker with a big visible S. Just as beginners mark their cars, asking for a certain level of leniency, retirees could do this too, so that the drivers around them see that they need to be more careful and anticipate everything possible . Then, for example, others would not press so much for such cars. It’s just a small thing, but it could bring a lot of positive.
