This year marks the 460th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth. Probably the most famous playwright and poet. In his native England, he is called the national poet or bard of Avon (he was born in Stratford-upon-Avon). You, your children, and your grandchildren learned about it in school. His plays are an integral part of the repertoires of all kinds of theaters. Probably the most famous love story and also the most famous work of William Shakespeare is the play Romeo and Juliet about the lovers from the feuding families of Verona, the Montagues and the Capulets, whose love was unrequited and ended tragically. 4. You must also know the play Macbeth, Shakespeare wrote it in 1606, but it is still played today. It tells the story of the Scottish nobleman Macbeth, his rise up the social ladder to the kingship, but also the story of betrayal, hatred and revenge. Do you know what Macbeth’s wife was called?
5. Tender and romantically inclined Bianca, her wild sister Kateřina, and good-hearted brute Petruchio. Do you know in which Shakespeare play these three characters play the main role?

6. Othello is another famous tragedy from the pen of the English playwright. The main character Othello is of Moorish origin. But do you remember what his occupation is?

He is the captain of a merchant ship in Venice.

7. Falstaff is a licentious nobleman, a downright comic character from historical plays about Henry IV. But he also plays one of the main roles in Shakespeare’s comedy, which is said to have been created at the request of Queen Elizabeth I. She is said to have liked Falstaff so much that she wanted to see him in the play. So what famous comedy did he appear in?

8. Twelfth Night is one of William Shakespeare’s famous comedies full of disguises, funny mistakes, humorous scenes and of course love. The main characters are a pair of siblings. Will you choose the right one?

9. King Lear is another classic tragedy from the pen of the English playwright. Do you remember what it is about?

About a king who commits suicide after stabbing his only daughter with a dagger because he thinks she murdered her mother (his beloved wife). But then he finds out that he was wrong and the girl was innocent.

About a king who goes mad after he divides his kingdom between two of his three daughters just because he gets carried away by flattery.

About a king who mercilessly kills his wife because he believes she is unfaithful to him with his arch-rival. But he discovers that it wasn’t true, and remorse drives him insane.

10. We started with Romeo and Juliet, so why not end with them. “Oh Romeo, Romeo! Why are you Romeo? Deny your name, deny your father, or, if you will not, consecrate yourself to me, and I shall cease to be a Capulet.” One of the most famous parts of the play you may know. But do you remember where it takes place?

It is the so-called balcony scene, when Romeo stands in the gardens under the windows of Juliet’s room. The girl goes out on the balcony and Romeo confesses his love to her.

It is one of the first scenes of the play, when Romeo sees Juliet for the first time at the ball and is enchanted. He immediately confesses his love to her, but she knows that their families are enemies.

This is the near-final scene just before Juliet stabs herself with a dagger because she discovers that Romeo is dead. She doesn’t want to live without him.
