Who doesn’t know Officer Radar from the series M*A*S*H! Eighty-year-old American actor Gary Burghoff became famous all over the world thanks to this character. But it is said that his colleagues did not like him so much.

Radar was far from the main character of M*A*S*H. Nevertheless, he kept himself in it after incredible 8 series and became dear to the TV viewers. He didn’t play a doctor, just a doctor corporal and acted as official. You probably remember him always calling someone from his serial office and dealing with the bureaucracy itself. Unlike two charismatic surgeons, Benjamin “Hawkeye” Pierce and “Trapper” John McIntyre, the uncertain, loves his animals and sleeps with a teddy bear. He is simply such an interesting secondary character that the viewer quickly gets used to nice, non-confrontational and is an integral part of the series.

Gary Burghoff was not like Radar

The actor Gary Burghoff already appeared in the spin-off to the series and was the only one of the actors to transfer his role to the subsequently filmed series M*A*S*H. But he did not persist in it until the end. He claimed that he had because of the frequent and time-consuming filming too little time for my family and a personal life for him basically did not exist. It also bothered him that people recognized him on the street and reported to him. This is also why he developed burnout syndrome and despite the fame that the character of Radar brought him, he decided to quit.
It was reportedly good news for a number of his colleagues. Even though Radar was a popular character, it is said that the actors did not get along very well with his representative – during filming he often exploded and was not very welcomingso working with him was difficult at times.

A contented life after M*A*S*Hi

After leaving M*A*S*H, Burghoff only appeared in a few roles. But maybe he didn’t mind that much because he finally got the privacy he wanted and disappeared from the public eye. American native Connecticut at the same time, he had no shortage of offers, but he rejected many of them. He devoted himself travelthen he started painting – and even his paintings exhibited in various world galleries. In 1999, he had his own on television “Pets: Part of the Family” about the relationships between people and their pets. He was twice married and his daughter of Gene she inherited her acting talent from him (they starred together in the film Tribute).

Achievements of Gary Burghoff

Although the representative of the series Radar was probably not an ideal acting partner and turned his colleagues off with many of his character traits, his talent cannot be denied. He was also duly awarded – for his role in the series M*A*S*H it was Burghoff seven times nominated for the award Emma. He finally got her in 1977 as Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He said goodbye to the series at the beginning of the eighth season with the two-part episode “Goodbye Radar”, in which he even forced the final scene to be reshot, because he reportedly did not like it after watching it and wanted to end the role differently.

Teddy bear

He said he wanted to take his famous teddy bear with him as a souvenir, but he couldn’t find it. It only appeared years later, when the actor managed to auction it off at an auction for unbelievable prices 11 million dollars.
