If Trump went to jail, armed security would have to go with him

--

At the aforementioned meeting, which took place last week and with the participation of agents of the US Secret Service, the main issue was how to ensure Trump’s transfer and security in the event that the ex-president was briefly sent to a cell in the courthouse for contempt of court, the NYT wrote. The procedure in case the court imposes a longer prison sentence on Trump has so far only been dealt with indirectly. But the security guard, whose task is to continuously monitor the safety of American ex-presidents, would probably have to go to prison with him.

Trump would have to be kept separate from other inmates and his food would be subject to special control, as would his personal belongings, the NYT wrote, citing informed officials. Agents would also have to be armed, another thing that is completely out of line with normal prison rules. Several state and city prisons in New York have recently closed, so some abandoned buildings or their wings could be used just for the ex-president and his team, some of the officials added, according to the newspaper.

The current trial in New York, which involves the alleged falsification of accounting records to cover up a payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels, may be the only one of Trump’s four criminal cases (the others involve allegations of trying to sway the outcome of the election or the unauthorized retention of classified documents) that will lead to the November election will end up in front of a jury. Judge Juan M. Merchan could sentence him to up to four years in state prison for the 34 counts of falsifying accounting, but for a first-time offender in Trump’s age, it would be an extremely severe sentence, the website noted. If Trump were to be convicted and become president again, he would not be able to receive a pardon in this case because it is a state, not federal, case.

On Tuesday, a New York court considered the prosecutor’s request that Trump be fined $10,000 (almost CZK 240,000) for violating a court order that limits his public statements about actors in the trial surrounding the alleged falsification of the ex-president’s financial records. The judge forbade Trump to talk about potential witnesses or jury members, but the ex-president has repeatedly expressed himself in this regard in recent days in front of journalists or on the Internet.

According to the prosecutor’s office, he violated the ban at least ten times. If convicted of contempt of court as a result, Trump could theoretically face up to 30 days in jail for each such misdemeanor. However, the indictment does not yet demand this imprisonment of the ex-president. On the contrary, she pointed out that this is exactly what Trump would probably want.
