The Prague Marathon, which will be held on Sunday, May 5, will bring approximately 200 million crowns to the Czech economy. Representatives of the RunCzech organization, which organizes the Prague races, told journalists today. Thanks to running races, Prague attracts tens of thousands of domestic and foreign tourists. According to the organizers, over 8,000 runners signed up for the race this year, roughly half of which are participants from abroad, and thanks to this, the metropolis will become more visible, according to the organization.
The marathon of the RunCzech series in Prague will take place for the twenty-ninth time, on Sunday, May 5 from 09:00, the start and finish are in the Old Town Square. Over 10,000 competitors – elite endurance runners and recreational runners – can take part in it.
According to RunCzech marketing manager Jiří Nečásek, the economic benefit for Prague will be approximately 200 million crowns this year, compared to 190 million last year. “When a marathon runner goes to that race, he usually doesn’t go alone, nowadays they also combine it with tourism, and therefore he takes his family or friends with him. So they sometimes have to stay, eat somewhere, usually buy some kind of souvenir, so the economic benefit for Prague is there.” said Nečásek.
At the same time, the marathon should make Prague more visible globally, according to Nečásek, tourists are also interested in Prague’s monuments. In addition, according to him, the race will be broadcast, for example, on the YouTube platform, and according to him, Czech Television should also broadcast it.
According to the organizers, the RunCzech running races usually attract around 107,000 domestic and foreign tourists to Prague at the time of the races, i.e. in April, May and September. Nečásek said that apart from the marathon, the Prague Half Marathon, which was held this year on April 6, is particularly popular. Over 15 thousand people took part in it.
According to Nečásek, the organizers will strengthen the event’s organizational measures this year, because dozens of people had problems with overheating at the April half-marathon, which was held in unusually high temperatures. “We expect that there will be 16 refreshment stations at the Prague Marathon, eight of them with ionic drinks. In total, we have prepared 30,000 liters of water and over 16,000 liters of isotonic drink,” stated According to him, there will also be 34 first aid medical patrols and four bicycle patrols with defibrillators on the track, and the Golem medical module for mass disasters will be available from the rescue service.
According to Nečásek, the competitors will also be able to refresh themselves with fruit, 27,000 bananas and 17,000 oranges will be prepared for them. The organizers will inform the participants about the risks of warm weather. Temperatures are expected to exceed 20 degrees Celsius over the weekend.
