Prague – Shortly after 09:30 a.m. today, the committee that will elect a new mayor began its deliberations at the seat of the Czech municipality of Sokolské (ČOS) in Malá Strana in Prague. The only candidate is the current first deputy mayor Martin Chlumský, who was entrusted with the management of the municipality after the resignation of Hana Moučková in connection with a multimillion-dollar fraud. There are 28 points at the meeting of the committee, which is expected to end in the afternoon, Sokol spokesman Radek Smekal told journalists today.

The committee, which has 86 Sokol members, also elects the deputy mayor and other members of the board. The term of office of all those elected will be until 2025, when the ČOS election convention will take place. In addition to Chlumský, four people are running for other positions. The committee will also approve the budget for this year or hear a report on the state of the municipality.

Chlumský has been the director of the Sokol school for many years. Before that, he was a teacher at a grammar school and worked externally at the Department of Physical Education of the Faculty of Pedagogy at Charles University. During Moučková’s tenure, he was the first deputy mayor of Sokol and has been temporarily leading the village since March. Chlumský has already stated that the goal of the Sokols and his personal goal is now to restore the trust of the member base and the public. He also wants to ensure the successful course of the upcoming all-Sokol meeting. Before the start, the deputy mayor did not want to comment on the meeting.

Moučková resigned at the extraordinary meeting of the committee in March, which was held due to the revelation of bank and credit fraud in the ČOS. According to the police, it was committed by Moučková’s former assistant, who, according to Sokol’s findings so far, defrauded the organization of about 46 million crowns. The municipality previously stated that the worker had committed suicide in its headquarters. According to the police, one of the suspects has died, but the circle of possible culprits has not yet been closed.

At the March meeting of the committee, another member of the board, Jan Boris Uhlíř, also resigned. The committee expressed confidence in the current 11 members of the ČOS board. At his own request, the director of the ČOS office, Marek Tesař, also quit, citing his behavior and attitude towards Moučková as the reason.

If Chlumský gets a majority of the votes of the delegates present, according to the organization, the 1st deputy mayor will also be elected. Miroslav Kroc from Sokol Stupno and Peter Szenasy from Sokol Křivoklát are applying for this position. In the event that Kroc becomes the 1st deputy mayor, the deputy mayor will also be elected, and Kamila Šrolerová from Sokol Maxičky will remain a candidate in the proposal for his election. If Szenasy is elected as the 1st deputy mayor, Kroc will remain as deputy mayor and Šrolerová will strive for one place in the presidency together with Jaroslav Postl from Sokol Nová Ves u Chrastava.

In 2022, Sokol had almost 160,000 members, similar to between 2017 and 2020. About half of them were children and youth.
