The controversial ceremony, which people watched via social media, took place amid the sound of drums, the burning of aromatic substances and the presence of Senator Adolfo Gómez of the ruling Moreno party, NTN24 reported.

But the leadership of the parliamentary chamber strongly distanced itself from the ritual. “The action took place based on the personal initiative of Senator Gómez, who justified it by the need to protect the customs and traditions of the indigenous community,” the Senate presidency said.

In a statement, it recalled that it had previously refused to allow the politician to bring any animals to the facility in accordance with the applicable protocol. “We do not support similar events in any way and we will take disciplinary action against the senator,” added the leadership of the parliamentary chamber, saying that it advocates for the rights and protection of animals.

Anthropologist Marco Matías Alonso did not spare criticism either. “They took it out of context, it looked absurd, incoherent and ridiculous. The Senate is a place for making laws and debating the nation’s problems, not for sacrificing animals. They tore a piece of our culture,” he emphasized, according to El Universal newspaper.

Animal protection organizations also reacted sharply, demanding Gómez’s resignation and organizing demonstrations.
