The head of the US House resisted an attempt to recall | iRADIO

--

The US House of Representatives on Thursday night rejected a proposal by strongly conservative Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to impeach House Speaker Mike Johnson. Congressmen voted by a majority of 359 to 43 that they did not want to deal with her initiative, writes the AP agency. The Georgia hardliner called Johnson’s leadership “pathetic, weak and unacceptable” in her speech.

Taylor Greene has been announcing for a long time that she will try to unseat her colleague from Louisiana. For now, however, even the opposition House Democrats have indicated that they are willing to support a Republican at the head of the chamber in order to maintain political stability.

“Our decision to stop Marjorie Taylor Greene from plunging the country into chaos is based on our commitment to solving problems,” said House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“As I said at the beginning, I intend to continue my work and accept responsibility for its results. That’s my guidance,” Johnson noted after the vote, adding that he hoped the vote would mark “the end of personal politics.”

‘Now is not the time’

Eleven Republicans spoke out to trigger the no-confidence vote – more than were needed to impeach former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last fall. The fragility of Johnson’s position is underscored by the fact that a single congressman or congresswoman can trigger a vote of no confidence in the president.

Taylor Greene’s move did not win the support of Donald Trump, although the congresswoman is an ally of his. “Absolutely (Taylor Greene) I adore,” Trump said, according to the AP, but he called on Republicans to work to defeat Democrats in the November election. “Sometimes maybe (Johnson will be dismissed)but now is not a good time,” Trump added.

Johnson, the 52-year-old Republican chairman, won the support of a number of Democrats a few weeks ago when, after months of delay, he brought to the floor a series of US foreign military aid bills that included aid to Russia-attacked Ukraine and Israel, although many said he risked his personal political career. Johnson previously opposed US support for Ukraine as a rank-and-file congressman.
