An eighty-eight-year-old motorcyclist also went on the sleepy ride of veterans

Eighty-eight-year-old Libuše Šulcová came to Přerov on Sunday for a sleepy ride of veterans on an English BSA 770 motorcycle from 1928. She is still a bit of a “revelation” even for connoisseurs of motoring. In a good way. Despite the fact that she will soon be ninety years old, she also masters a demanding discipline for men – riding a motorcycle with a sidecar.

A hundred shiny motorcycles and cars of the pre-war and inter-war era set off from Horní náměstí in Přerov on Sunday for a dreamy ride through the region. The oldest participant was 88-year-old Libuše Šulcová, she set out on a BSA 770 motorcycle with a sidecar from 1928.

She compiled the interesting family story of her husband’s father, Augustin Šulec, who was the exclusive importer of BSA motorcycles to the Czech Republic during the First Republic, into a book and presented the publication at this year’s biggest veteran meeting in Přerov.

“My husband’s father Augustin Šulc and his uncle founded the company Šulcová brothers in 1923 and became the exclusive importers of BSA motorcycles to Czechoslovakia. From 1923 to 1940, before the Germans closed the borders, a total of 4,269 BSA motorcycles were imported here,” Libuše Šulcová described and presented the machine she arrived on.

“A 1928 BSA 770 English motorcycle put together by my husband from parts purchased in 2000 with the comment that it was for my birthday – past and future. I’ve been riding with her since then,” revealed Libuše Šulcová.

“It’s a two-cylinder, 770 cc, has twelve horses and takes eight to nine liters per hundred kilometers. The top speed with the sidecar is 90 kilometers, but after those huge years I drive at a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour. I’m probably the only woman who drives a motorcycle with a sidecar, because girls don’t really get into it,” described the smiling motorcyclist who came to Přerov from Průhonice near Prague.

She is said to have been introduced to her love of motorcycles by her husband. “And she has remained to this day. I got a new tow truck from my son in the 1970s, and then a covered garage for a motorcycle in the 1980s,” she said. The furthest they went with her husband was in 2005 at a six-day veterans meeting in Switzerland.

A hundred vintage motorcycles and cars

The fun ride of automobile and motorcycle veterans started on Sunday at eleven o’clock in the morning from Horní náměstí in Přerov. From nine o’clock, the visitors enjoyed a varied program in which the Vocantes Children’s Choir performed and the Dance Club dance group also performed.

A hundred kilometers of shiny machines of various brands from the pre-war era set out on a hundred-kilometer route that led through the villages of Přerovsk, Hranick, and Kroměříž.

“There are about a hundred historic vehicles here, which I secretly wished for – the event was limited to machines with a production date up to 1945. There were wonderful gems on display – for example, a luxury Hispano-Suiza car arrived. I am also very glad that representatives of the Kratochvíl family have arrived. Everyone knows Jirka Kratochvíl, the owner of Přerov veterans, who had a huge collection of cars. His family arrived with a Panhard Levassor vehicle from 1912,” explained Jiří Zemánek from the Oltimer club Helfštýn, which organizes the event.

The well-known automobile family from Přerov presented another car called Máňa. “It’s a Tatra 11 from 1924. During the floods in 1997, this car floated in the water, so we dismantled it and are leaving it in its original condition,” explained the owner, Ivona Kratochvílová.

“In previous years, we were not at the veterans’ meeting because we did not have any mobile vehicles. Now that we’re also going to honor Jirka Kratochvíl’s father, we can’t miss it. So we swept away the spiders and arrived,” she added. It was “Máňa” that was awarded by the mayor of the city, Petr Vrána, with the cup for the most likable car.
