There is a risk of strong storms with hail and gusts of wind in Olomouc

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) issued a warning against strong thunderstorms on Monday.

The warning covers the entire Olomouc region and is valid from 2 p.m. Monday until midnight on Tuesday.

“An isolated occurrence of strong thunderstorms with short-term totals of around 30 mm, wind gusts of around 20 m/s (70 km/h) and hail up to 2 cm is expected,” warns the ČHMÚ.

According to the ČHMÚ, the first showers and thunderstorms began to form in Pošumaví and Novohradské hory on Monday.

“In the following hours, there should be more of them, especially in the area of South Bohemia and the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Within them, hail up to 2 cm and wind gusts of around 70 km/h and short-term intense precipitation may occur later. These storms should have a gradual progress towards the east to the northeast,” the ČHMÚ reported on the social network on Monday.

“During the afternoon and evening, the storms should merge into larger units – so-called MCS – mesoscale storm systems. There is a particular risk of wind gusts (again up to around 70 km/h) and torrential rainfall. They will progress from west to east to northeast and will move relatively slowly,” meteorologists describe.

Locally, torrential rain may occur in the region and flooding of, for example, underpasses, basements and lower-lying areas may occur. Also damming of small streams.

“Even smaller hail and lightning can pose a danger. It is necessary to pay attention to safety, especially with regard to the danger of being struck by lightning and being injured by falling objects, especially branches,” reminds the ČHMÚ.

When driving a vehicle in a storm, you need to reduce your speed and drive very carefully.
