The accident at the Pardubice horse races, when the horse ran into the spectators, is being investigated by the police

--

The frightened animal found itself uncontrollably in the cauldron of spectators behind both fences. Injured viewers should be fine, according to Novinek. “We are interviewing witnesses, evaluating camera footage and medical records. We are investigating whether there was a violation of safety regulations,” police spokeswoman Markéta Janovská told Novinka.

After a long jump, a nine-year-old race mare knocked over an elderly man and then a boy in the spectator aisle. Subsequently, after a few tens of meters, she injured a woman and another man at the gate where the horses pass from the racetrack to the stables. But the animal calmed down a bit. “Especially the carom with the boy looked menacing. Fortunately, miraculously, nothing serious happened. As far as I know, the boy got out of it well,” one of the employees of the racetrack told Novinka.

The woman and the boy were taken to the hospital by an ambulance. One of the injured men was treated by paramedics on the spot, and the other, according to Janovska, left for medical treatment on his own.

The grasshopper ended up with abrasions

The grasshopper escaped without serious injuries. “She ended up with scrapes and was immediately treated by a vet. She acted on instinct. A horse that finds itself in danger reacts by running away, and if something gets in its way, it jumps over it,” a racecourse employee told Novinka.

Obstacles, the tallest of which measured one hundred and thirty centimeters, the filly had in her legs during the steeplechase. The highest obstacle at the Pardubice racetrack is a meter and a half high taxis, which was not part of Wednesday’s obstacle course. It is jumped only once a year near Velká Pardubická. “A metre-and-a-half high mesh fence, between which there is a roughly seventy-centimeter gap, was jumped by the grasshopper. But the wire fence was a little damaged after the jump,” described an employee of the racetrack.

A similar incident has never happened at the Pardubice racecourse in the entire almost 170-year history of the local horse racing sport. “No way. Nothing like this happened even at one of the most visited races in Velká Pardubická, which has been held here since 1874. This year we will celebrate the 150th anniversary,” confirmed racecourse administrator Václav Žižka.
