Weather | Strong storms hit the Czech Republic. The downpour and mud deposits paralyzed the D1 highway. Keep an eye on Lightning’s radar

A strong storm passed through České Budějovice in the afternoon. Water accumulated under the viaducts in Generála Píky Street and Pražská třída. The traffic there was directed by policemen, informed their spokesman Miroslav Šupík.

Firefighters have so far intervened in two dozen incidents due to the storm, all of them related to České Budějovice. “We mainly pump water from cellars and garages and from clogged canals,” said Vendula Matějů, a spokeswoman for the South Bohemian Fire Department.

Firefighters in Central Bohemia have had ten exits, the trouble was on the D1 highway, said Jan Sýkora, spokesman for the Central Bohemian fire department.

The highway was at the 57th kilometer in temporarily impassable in the direction of Brno, then cars started driving in the parking lane. “The mud from the fields has flowed there, the road is not damaged,” police spokesman Pavel Truxa told ČTK.

Firefighters also intervened in Kondrac in Benešovsk, where water got from the street into one of the houses. In Hradišťek near Sedlčany in the Příbram region, firefighters were removing a fallen tree and in Trhový Štěpánov in the Benešov region, they went to a flooded stream. “Branches got caught under the bridge, so water began to accumulate there and threatened to flow towards the hotel,” said Sýkora.

There is a threat of rising levels

“Due to the current saturation, there is an increased probability of fluctuations (levels) in the streams draining especially the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and also the Jeseníky and Beskydy Mountains,” the meteorologists added.

According to the CHMÚ forecast, rain or showers will occur throughout the week, with the exception of Thursday, when it will be clear to partly cloudy. There will be isolated showers on Friday and over the weekend.

Even Tuesday morning will probably start with rain, especially in the southwest, the showers should be more plentiful and last longer. Thunderstorms may occasionally occur again. At night, the temperature will drop to a minimum of 9 °C, during the day it will rise to 20 °C, while it will drop to 13 °C during longer-lasting precipitation. A moderate wind will not exceed a speed of 6 m/s.

The sky will remain cloudy on Wednesday morning, and rain can be expected especially in the south-west of the country. By the evening, however, precipitation and cloudiness should gradually decrease. The lowest night temperatures should drop to 8 °C, during the day the highest will not exceed 17 °C. Northeast winds will remain light Thursday and Friday it will be 17 to 21 degrees during the day and 16 to 21 degrees at the weekend Celsius.

At night, temperatures will mostly stay a few degrees above zero throughout the week, but ground frosts may appear in places from Thursday. “Drier and cooler air will begin to move in from the northeast during Tuesday and Wednesday night. There will be more sunshine, but at night we have to count on lower temperatures between seven and two degrees Celsius, on the ground and ground frosts that will last in some places until the weekend.” announced the ČHMÚ on the X network.
