The Czech Republic is dealing with predatory magazines. What are they all about and how do you know them?

--

Last week, Pavel Tuleja gave up his nomination as Minister for Science and Research, the reason being his publications in predatory magazines. On Monday, it came to light that Danuš Nerudová’s lyrics were also published in controversial titles. How do you know such magazines?

“Some of my older works that were published before 2016 are being addressed again. Before this year, universities did not have clear rules for so-called journals of dubious quality (predatory journals),” explains Danuše Nerudová, the leader of the STAN candidate for the European Parliament elections, on Instagram .

The list of reports counted a total of nine such publications between 2009 and 2015. Six of the former rector’s articles were published in a predatory magazine Business Reviewtwo in Journal of American Business Review and one in American Academy of Business Review. “However, since the setting of clear rules, I have not published in any such magazine,” adds Nerudová in the caption on the social network.

What is a predator magazine?

In the framework of predatory journals, publishers publish articles for a fee, which, however, have not passed the appropriate review process. “The author sends his text to the editors of a predatory magazine and they publish it very quickly,” notes Klára Šeďová from the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University. The author pays the publisher and the article is published without review, which makes the researchers’ work easier and accelerates their careers, and the publishers make money.

“On the contrary, in renowned scientific journals, the time for submission and publication of a text can take several years due to a thorough review process and several rounds of requests to revise the manuscript,” adds Šeďová.

How do you recognize a predatory magazine?

Predatory magazines can be difficult to recognize at first glance, as they tend to have a similar appearance and identical page content to established ones. However, there is no specific contact information for predatory journals, they incorrectly state impact factors or ISSN. At the same time, they either have fictitious editorial boards, or they depict academics without their consent.
