Liberation was opposed by many people. It is not surprising that today it is celebrated even more in terms of propaganda than under socialism, says Boris Latýn, “Moravian spymaster” and candidate of the opposition movement for the European Parliament, in his commentary.

Under the previous regime, when we were ruled by people’s democracy before 1989, we celebrated the anniversary of the liberation of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet army on May 9. It was not entirely accurate, because part of southern and western Bohemia was already behind the demarcation line agreed between the three world powers of the time, the USSR, the USA and Great Britain. This line of demarcation determined the maximum advance of the American and British armies in the eastern direction, as well as the advance of the Soviet Union in the opposite direction. The largest Czech city behind the demarcation line was Pilsen, and its liberation was not much talked about at the time, in short, propaganda simplified the whole matter to liberation by the Soviet army.

After 1989 and the advent of democracy, the situation began to change. Pilsen was suddenly a “star” in the news of the May Days, everyone rejoiced at the news that they could hang American flags and watch a parade of American military equipment in Pilsen. A year after the revolution, the name of the national holiday was changed to “Day of Liberation from Fascism” and a year later the date was also moved from May 9 to May 8, so as not to differ from our new Western friends who celebrated it on this very day. Interestingly, the Poles only made this change in 2015. May 9 certainly has its reasons. The first is that Prague, but also Jihlava, was not liberated until May 9th. The same day marks the capitulation of Hitler’s Germany after Moscow time, which did not apply in Prague, but the Soviet Union played a vital role in the defeat of Germany in Europe. It didn’t matter that the national holiday was moved a day earlier, but worse came later. In 2000, another change took place, the name of the national holiday was changed to Liberation Day and finally, four years later, it was aligned with what the Anglo-Saxons call it, i.e. Victory Day.

After that, slow changes took place. Unelected political non-profits gradually gained strength, and democracy increasingly gave way to the liberal democracy associated with them. Unlike the rapid transition of power from people’s democracy to democracy, the transition from democracy to liberal democracy was very slow and gradual. This went hand-in-hand with the gradual decrease of information in the media space about the liberating actions of the Soviet army and, on the contrary, more and more information about the heroic operations of the American army.

And today this day is celebrated in the mainstream media even more stupidly than it was during the people’s democracy. Just the news from Pilsen, American military equipment is even passing through Prague, which it did not liberate, and the Soviet equipment is nowhere to be found. It is a sign of the decline of truth, morality and the entire liberal-democratic regime. And at the same time, over 110,000 Soviets and 30,000 Romanians were liberated. Americans who came to the almost empty western Bohemia, a little over 100 soldiers. What is also schizophrenic about it is that the 2nd Ukrainian Front of the Red Army had the lion’s share of the liberation, and Ukraine is a country that the current regime greatly supports. In addition, it was commanded by Marshal Malinovsky, a Ukrainian born in Odessa. The whole thing is so absurd that many people are disgusted by the liberation celebrations.
