A year after Michal Koudelka was appointed brigadier general, the head of the Czech counterintelligence received another promotion and President Petr Pavel promoted him to the rank of major general at the Prague Castle on Wednesday at the Prague Castle, on the proposal of the government, and the director of the Security Information Service (BIS) has been waiting for a long time for his new rank a shorter period of time than for his previous promotion, which former President Miloš Zeman had previously rejected seven times in a row.

Former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) tried to promote Koudelka to the rank of general with ex-president Zeman, but Zeman rejected this step several times. “We have a different opinion on it. Mr. Koudelka deserves the rank of general,” Babiš commented on the unsuccessful persuasion of then-President Zeman during his tenure as prime minister. The current prime minister, Petr Fiala (ODS), later sought the same promotion of Koudelka, but he also ran into Zeman.

The former president complained several times that he was not satisfied with Koudelka’s work, and in 2018 he described the Security Information Service (BIS) as “incompetent” or a “scumbag”. “When they talk about the fact that there are a lot of Russian and Chinese spies here, and yet in six years they haven’t been able to catch even a single one, then it’s talking about the work of the BIS,” Zeman evaluated the work of the BIS in an interview with TV Barrandov.

Thus, Koudelka became a brigadier general only after the current president, Petr Pavel, replaced him at Hrad Zeman. After the current promotion to the rank of major general, Koudelka thanked for the appreciation of his work and that of his subordinates and reminded us of the security situation we are in today.

“The situation in the world is extremely tense and affects us more than we would like. It is therefore logical that today the citizens of our country look to the security forces with trust and expectation more than at any time in the past. On behalf of the army and the security forces, I want to clearly say and assure the Czech public that we are ready to live up to our oath and do everything in our power to ensure that the Czech Republic remains one of the safest countries in the world and a pleasant place to live,” he said Koudelka at Prague Castle.

He then received congratulations from a number of government politicians for his promotion. The President of the Chamber of Deputies and the head of TOP 09, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, also congratulated the head of BIS warmly.

“The security information service under his leadership has been doing excellent work for a long time – among other things, it exposed the Russian agents who were behind the explosion of the ammunition warehouse in Vrbětice. After all, for many years he was a thorn in the side of Miloš Zeman precisely for exposing the influence operations of Russia and China. It’s good that he’s getting satisfaction now,” she commented.

“Finally! Few people deserve it!” MEP Tomáš Zdechovský also celebrated Koudelk’s promotion.

“Major General Koudelka! Nice, nice,” MEP and chairman of Prague’s TOP 09 Jiří Pospíšil also shared with a heart.

And TOP 09 member of parliament Helena Langšádlová, who ended up in the position of Minister for Science, Research and Innovation at the beginning of this week, also did not hide her joy. “Today, BIS director Michal Koudelka was promoted to the rank of major general. He undoubtedly deserves this award for the long-term protection of our country’s security interest,” she said.

At the same time, however, there is a prediction that Koudelka’s promotion is not just that. “Therefore, let’s expect another big revelation by Koudelk soon, which will either reveal things known for a long time, or nothing at all. Even the stars on the shoulders are not free,” predicts commentator Petr Holec after the news that Koudelko has an extra star on his shoulders.
