President Pavel took part in the commemoration in Vítkov, who spoke in his speech about the historical paradox, when Nazi Germany gradually became a democratic country and Russia, which was part of the victorious Soviet Union at the time, is today the aggressor.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Minister of Defense Jana Černochová, Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda (all ODS) and Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka were also present at Vítkov. The event also included a flyover of airplanes and helicopters of the Army Air Forces.

The President of the Senate Miloš Vystrčil (ODS) and Prime Minister Fiala were also present at the appointment of the generals at the Castle. Director of the Security Information Service (BIS), Michal Koudelka, was promoted from the rank of brigadier general to major general after a year.

“A promotion is also a responsibility, which is by no means small given the current complex security situation. Brutal Russian aggression against Ukraine, the terrible attack of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas on Israel, the growing global risk of terrorism, the growing tension between China and Taiwan, and I could go on,” said Koudelka.

“On behalf of the army and security forces, I want to assure the Czech public that we are determined to live up to our oath and do everything to ensure that the Czech Republic remains one of the safest countries in the world and a pleasant place to live,” said the director of BIS.

Director of the General Inspection of the Security Forces (GIBS) Vít Hendrych became a brigadier general. Pavel promoted the former director of the Military Intelligence (VZ) Jiří Růžek to the rank of retired brigadier general at the suggestion of Defense Minister Jana Černochová (ODS).

He appointed Michal Baran, director of the Military Health Services Section of the Ministry of Defense, Radek Haratek, commander of cyber forces and information operations, Martin Janatka, chief of staff of the Operations Command, and Jiří Líbal, commander of the Fourth Rapid Deployment Brigade, as brigadier generals.

At the proposal of the Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan (STAN), the president appointed as brigadier generals the head of the operations center of the police presidium, František Habad, the director of the Special Activities Unit of the Police, Milan Černek, the director of the South Moravian Fire Department, Jiří Pelikán, the commander of the Prague Castle Fire Protection Department, Radek Stránský, and the retired brigadier general of the former director Office for Foreign Relations and Information (ÚZSI) Petr Zeman.

Pavel also appointed Petar Červené, the director of the Příbram Prison, as Brigadier General, at the suggestion of the Minister of Justice Pavel Blažek (ODS).

Commemorative events on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the end of the Second World War are also held, for example, in Brno, Pardubice, Havlíčková Brod or Liberec. In Hranice, the ceremonial entry of Czech and American army units took place. The program of Senate President Vystrčil and Prague Mayor Svoboda also included a memorial service to honor the memory of the victors over Nazism at Prague’s Olšan Cemetery.

In the evening, the Straka Academy, i.e. the seat of the Czech government, will be ceremonially lit up in the Czech tricolor.
