Because of the unexpectedly warm April, the irises bloomed prematurely.
“In the last thirty years that I’ve been working in the garden, I don’t remember anything like this. It’s an absolutely extreme situation. By this time in the past we have usually been able to watch the first of the irises bloom and now many are already in full bloom. That’s why we had to postpone the event, because in three weeks they will be out of bloom,” the head of the botanical garden, Michal Pavlík, told Novinkám.
The iris exhibition is called IRIS, and those interested can visit it until Monday, May 13. It is one of the largest collections of irises in the Czech Republic, and many of the cultivars have won international floristic awards in the past. In total, over a thousand iris plants are planted in the garden.

“They are sorted by color and breeding time, so the visitor can follow the gradual development of the flowers over time. They can vividly see how they were bred, how the large-flowered varieties that are very popular increased over time,” added Pavlík.
The collection of irises was founded in the 1970s and is constantly supplemented with newly bred cultivars.
