Last year, the zoo on Svaté Kopeček near Olomouc increased its total revenue by 13 percent to 116.3 million crowns from 103 million crowns in 2022. The zoo’s management ended in 2023 with a profit of 2.15 million crowns, which was 1.352 million crowns higher year-on-year. Almost 382,000 visitors passed through the gates of the Olomouc Zoo last year, which was 14,000 more than last year. It was the highest attendance in 25 years.

“I consider the year 2023 to be very successful. The visitors did not resent our zoo and supported us with their visit despite two years of intensive construction work, which took place almost throughout the zoo and partially restricted the passage of roads and the zoo for visitors.” said zoo director Radomír Habáň in the annual report. Due to higher attendance, the zoo’s income from entrance fees increased by 2.1 million crowns to 40.6 million crowns last year. Last year, visitors to the zoo spent nearly 24 million crowns on refreshments in the restaurant and several stalls, a fifth more year-on-year.

The Olomouc Zoo invested almost 55 million crowns in 2023 with the help of financial contributions from the city and subsidies. Among the most significant investments were the construction of new utility networks, the installation of a parking system in the parking areas around the zoo, and the reconstruction of the giraffe pavilion. Part of the investment went into the modernization of catering establishments. Last year, the zoo opened the last two stages of the safari, focused on the Arctic and Australia. At the exit from the zoo, she opened a new terrarium exhibit.

266 cubs were born in Olomouc Zoo last year. “The most important breeding can be considered the female of the Cape grebe or the Canadian urzon, the Rodriguez bat, the lara gibbon or the Mesopotamian fallow deer. The white-tailed wildebeest was the first cub of the year to open the breeding season, and the Cape honeyeater closed it as the last cub of the year.” stated Haban.

The Olomouc Zoo is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Olomouc Region. It keeps 1,828 animals of 387 species on an area of 42 hectares. The garden earns approximately two-thirds of the amount needed for its operation through its own activities. It receives a contribution from the city for its activities, which last year amounted to 41 million crowns.
