A total of 33 cemeteries in Prague will change their orientation system and furniture. It will be unified and will be based on the winning design from the competition won by Eduard Herrmann and Josef Tomšej. The thoughtful, simple and timeless design includes not only all conceivable forms of signage, but also anchoring methods or furniture including a water faucet and a watering can stand.
“Our intention was to create elements that not only respect the history of the place, but at the same time bring a clean aesthetic impression,” said designer Eduard Herrmann. “Death is a topic that concerns us all, and cemeteries still play an irreplaceable role in it when they mediate the ritual of farewell. Although it fascinates us, we tried to approach it with complete humility. We want our design to fit naturally and harmoniously into the environment of cemeteries,” added Josef Tomšej, the second of the designers.
“The jury appreciates the author’s originality and the aesthetic unity of the design and the appropriate use of material that corresponds with the tradition of cemeteries in general. It is a graphically clean solution, the visual uniformity is already visible from afar. The design will need to solve some technical details that could make maintenance difficult (for example, attaching the plate to the posts) and to thoroughly solve the connection of the elements. The work also attracted attention with its presentation and above-standard visual editing of the portfolio and drawing documentation,” said the jury regarding the winning proposal.
