The Olomouc Report is celebrating three years since its creation. For the whole month of May, you can read the series that the editors have put together for you for your birthday. Take a look at history with us, find out which articles were the most successful and remember the older members of our editorial staff.

In the first part, we deal with the current editorial. Similar to the weekly Highlights of the Week column, we have also selected several articles for you. This time, however, it concerns articles published within three years.

Lydia, editor-in-chief

You can get quite a lot done in three years. You can graduate with a bachelor’s degree, vote three times in elections, or raise a child who can start kindergarten this year. There would certainly be more, but each reader can decide for himself. This year in May, Report celebrates three years. For three years, he has been trying to accompany the people of Olomouc and locals from the Olomouc region on his website, covering news events and stories. Vital and local.

When I joined the editorial office, I had no idea how long it would be. Suddenly I’m sitting at the head of a small but ever-growing team, and I look back at the work done so far. Regional journalism is not among the most popular, it is often overlooked within the state, as well as topics that are important to the local people. And it is precisely those that the Report focuses on the most, and I also see the greatest benefit in that, years later. That the Report is here for local readers and that local topics make sense.

We recommend reading the article about life in the Hospice at Svaté Kopeček, or the life story of the little girl Annemarie. A man was roaming the cream orchards harassing women. Lydia received the testimony of several of them, as you could read in this article.

Jan, editor

When I joined the Olomouc Report editorial office in September 2021, I was in all respects a young journalist beginner who had no idea whether it was a mission for a month, two or a year. My knees and fingers were pounding on the keyboard. The daily reporting function went by very quickly and I can already look back on almost three years sitting in the editorial chair of the Olomouc Report and more than 3,000 articles written and published.

What I value most about this job is the opportunity to sit down with people who have many times more experience than I do. I can chat and interview professionals in my field or people who have their hearts in the right place. Conversations and interviews would have no meaning without the readers of the Olomouc Report, who are gradually increasing in number and for whom all this is created. I think I can speak for the entire editorial team when I write that we enjoy discovering little things for readers and bringing topics that pop up unexpectedly left or right.

However, the basis of the Olomouc Report’s work is to report on everyday life in Olomouc and the Olomouc region. On our editorial board is a simple note: “Contact with readers.” We write for people who are our friends, acquaintances and neighbors, mainly for them we will continue to write.

We recommend reading the text about Maruška Ponožka from Kateřinská street. Did you know that years later it will also estimate the size of the foot? Jan deals with local history in the section Forgotten Buildings. Read his text about the statue of Christ from Řepčín.

Daniel, editor

I’ve only been at Report for two months, and you could say that I’m still an editorial novice. Although I did not join the editorial office completely ignorant of the craft, as I gathered experience for two years in another regional media from Hané, there are still a lot of new things and possibilities that I could try, learn and use in practice.

I enjoy the environment of the newsroom with a huge bar inside, but above all the friendly team, not only in it, but in the entire “media house.” Apart from the local coffee machine and the desk, what I value most is the space that the editorial office gives to young novice journalists, who have the opportunity to work on big topics under the supervision of more seasoned editors who, so to speak, have the region under their skin. I would like to praise the work of the interns in the selection of the most interesting articles from the last time that I read on the Olomouc Report.

We recommend reading the article about signs on Olomouc houses. Do you know where the black dog came from? You can read about the specific Olomouc real estate market here. The home for released prisoners is a hot topic, that’s why we went directly to the house on Svátý Kopeček for a report.
