The accident happened on Thursday after 11 o’clock in Bezručova Street.

According to the police, the elderly driver in the Hyundai first stopped and let several pedestrians cross. But then he drove off and didn’t notice a woman walking by with a dog.

“The driver driving from the direction of Česká Ves should have stopped in front of the pedestrian crossing and given way to two pedestrians and a cyclist. After they left the crossing, the driver drove off, however, at the crossing, he overlooked a 44-year-old pedestrian with a dog coming from the direction of the ZETA electric power station, which he subsequently ran over the right part of the car,” described police spokeswoman Ivana Skoupilová.

According to her, when he heard the bang, the driver stopped immediately and saw a knocked-down pedestrian on the road in the rear-view mirror.

The rescuers were transporting the woman in danger of her life.

“She suffered severe, multiple injuries. The woman was transported by helicopter to the emergency department of the Olomouc University Hospital,” Lucie Mikisková, a spokeswoman for the rescue service, told Deník.

According to the police, a breath test ruled out alcohol in the driver.

“The dog was also injured in the accident and was treated by a veterinarian,” the police spokeswoman said.

The police officers have now started criminal proceedings on suspicion of committing the offense of causing bodily harm due to negligence.

“According to the Criminal Code, men face imprisonment for up to one year or a ban on activity if found guilty and convicted,” the police spokeswoman added.
