Regional councilors today approved four project plans for cycle paths on the so-called Greenway Jizera (GWJ), according to preliminary estimates, they will cost over 490 million crowns. The region is counting on the use of European subsidies, David Šíma, spokesman for the central Bohemian governorship, informed in a press release.

“The construction of trails in the GJW corridor fits exactly into our strategy, where the region invests primarily in the development of long-distance backbone cycle routes that connect to other regions,” said the governor’s deputy for public transport, Petr Borecký (STAN).

Councilors approved four sections, the longest will lead from Loukov through Mnichovo Hradiště to Bakov nad Jizerou and will be over 22 kilometers long. Cycle paths are also to connect Dalovice and Hrdlořezy, Mlada Boleslav and Venátky nad Jizerou and Venátky nad Jizerou with Káraný u Prahy. “After construction, we will connect the cities with the villages in the Jizera river valley and create a comfortable and, above all, safe communication for non-motorized transport. At the same time, the GWJ will heal from Kárané near Čelákovice to the borders of the Central Bohemia and Liberec regions,” added Borecký. The section from Dalovice to Hrdlořez near Mladá Boleslav will connect to the footbridge over the Jizera and the cycle path to Krásná louce, which is being built by Mladá Boleslav.

The cycle path along the entire course of the Jizera is part of a network of long-distance cycle routes covering the entire territory of the Czech Republic, measuring 75 kilometers in the Central Bohemia region. From the confluence of the Elbe and the Jizera in Kárané, the cycle route continues to the capital, where it connects to the system of cycle routes in Prague in Horní Počernice.
