Prague – A convoy of approximately 20 historic army vehicles and motorcycles in the center of Prague commemorated 79 years since the end of the Second World War. In front of the American embassy in Malá Strana, people could see the reconstructed cars, the Freedom Convoy then went to southern and western Bohemia. The event commemorating the liberation of part of Czechoslovakia by the American army has been held regularly since 2005, always on the last Friday in April. The celebrations will culminate next week in Pilsen.

According to American chargé d’affaires Christy Agorová, the convoy commemorates a significant moment in history, i.e. the liberation of Czechoslovakia by Allied troops from Nazi oppression at the end of World War II. “The legacy of bravery of those who liberated this nation 79 years ago enriches our lives today and motivates us to meet the challenges of today,” she said. She also paid tribute to the recently deceased main organizer of the convoy, Mirko Trubko, whose efforts, according to her, made the Freedom Convoy a strong reminder of the common past of the Czech Republic and the USA.

According to Agorová, this year is also significant due to the 25th anniversary of the entry of the Czech Republic into the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). The milestone underlines the depth of Czech-American friendship, but also the fundamental importance of cooperation and the commitment to jointly protect shared values, she noted. According to her, the war conflict in Ukraine and the cruelty that takes place there on a daily basis is a reminder of what is at stake. “Just as our alliance 79 years ago ensured victory over authoritarianism, we must now remain united in supporting Ukraine against the same threats,” she added.

The celebrations of the anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the liberation by the American army traditionally culminate in the Freedom Celebrations in Pilsen. Between May 3rd and 6th, the event will offer a rich military-historical and cultural program, which also includes exhibitions, concerts and memorial acts. The big Sunday Convoy of Liberty parade with 200 pieces of historical military equipment will also be included.
