ONLINE: In Ukraine, the front line is in danger of collapsing | iRADIO

--

In Ukraine, the front line is in danger of collapsing wherever the Russian generals decide to attack. The outlook is bleak from the Ukrainian point of view, Politico reported, citing unnamed high-ranking Ukrainian military officials. According to them, even the approval of the US aid package in the amount of 60 billion dollars (roughly 1.4 trillion crowns), which Ukraine has been waiting for for several months, would not prevent a fundamental Ukrainian failure on the battlefield.

The Russians are likely to “penetrate across the front line and cause it to collapse in some places,” Politico quoted sources as saying. According to him, it is not yet possible to predict where the Russians will attempt a breakthrough on the front line – stretching from Sumy and Kharkov in the north to Odessa in the south.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi recently warned that Ukrainians will have to retreat slowly and that even large Ukrainian cities could fall to Russia if the US Congress does not approve the expected aid package soon.

But even American aid might not be enough, Ukrainian military officials believe. “There is nothing that can help Ukraine at the moment because there are no essential technologies that can compensate for the large masses of troops that Russia is likely to throw at us. We don’t have such technology, and the West doesn’t have it in sufficient quantities either,” one of his sources from the Ukrainian military told Politico.

The bleak prospects, according to this source, can only be reversed by the determination and resilience of the Ukrainians or mistakes made by Russia, as in cases where a large number of soldiers and equipment were unnecessarily lost during the attacks.

Learned Russians

Weapons deliveries from the West are arriving late and in insufficient quantities, according to Ukrainian officials.

In this context, one of the newspaper’s sources recalled that the former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Valery Zaluzhnyi, previously pointed to the fact that even weapon systems considered groundbreaking lose their effectiveness over time, as Russian forces can quickly adapt to them.

“For example, we used Storm Shadow/SCALP guided missiles successfully, but only briefly. Russians are always learning. They don’t give us a second chance,” the paper’s source said.

“We often get weapons systems at a time when they are no longer relevant,” another senior military official pointed out, citing the US F-16 fighter jets as an example.

Ukrainian pilots are currently undergoing training to operate these machines. Ukrainian forces are expected to be able to deploy these fighters in the summer, notes Politico. “Every weapon has its time. F-16s were needed in 2023, they won’t be right for 2024,” the Ukrainian official noted.

Ukrainian officials agree that what Ukraine needs now are more drones and basic assets such as ammunition. They estimate that it would now need four million artillery shells and two million drones.

Several allies, led by the Czech Republic, are planning to provide Ukraine with about 1.5 million artillery shells in the near future, the newspaper recalled.
