After meeting with the Chinese president, Blinken said he made clear to him his concern about the supplies of materials, including machine tools and microelectronics, that Beijing supplies to Moscow and then uses them in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“Russia would have a hard time sustaining its aggression against Ukraine without China’s support,” Blinken said after meeting with the Chinese president. “Promoting the Russian defense industry threatens not only Ukrainian security, but also European security,” he continued.

“As we have been telling China for some time, ensuring transatlantic security is a core concern of the US. At our today’s (Friday’s – editor’s note) negotiations, I made it clear to China that it does not deal with this problem,” he concluded.

Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed that China and the US must find common ground, not engage in “vicious rivalry”. He added that China “is happy to see a confident, prosperous and flourishing United States” and that he hopes “the US can also look at China’s development in a positive light.”

China has chosen a side

US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith commented on China’s position even before Blinken’s departure. “China cannot claim to be neutral on this when in fact it has chosen a side,” she told Politico.

In Beijing, Blinken discusses not only the war in Ukraine, but also other contentious issues between the US and China. He also touched on the conflict in the Middle East, where Israel is conducting large-scale military operations in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for a terrorist attack by the radical Hamas movement last October. There has also been significant tension between Iran and Israel in recent weeks.

“I think the relationship that China has can be positive in trying to ease tensions, prevent escalation and prevent the spread of conflict,” Blinken told reporters, adding that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang had agreed to stay in touch with him on the Middle East issue.
