New devices come to the market with incomplete software. It has become a habit to debug problems on the fly – MobilMania.cz

--

In the mobile market, such an evil has spread to us. While a few years ago there was a long wait for new devices, as manufacturers tuned the software to be 100% perfect right from the start, today the trend is to put them on sale as quickly as possible. And this means that on the first day of sales, interested parties will come for a device that, in most cases, has not yet been updated with software. It almost seems that the bugs that are discovered by the first users have slipped through the fingers of the manufacturers, and so these devices have to be updated, not once, but maybe several times in a row.

In our January review of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, we mentioned that the camera isn’t quite there yet. Since then, the phone has received three updates, which focused (not only) on the higher quality of the photos taken

Samsung, for example, knows about this in the Galaxy S24 series, which in some markets has already received three updates focused on the camera (for the Ultra). And another update is planned for June, which should fix white balance, zoom quality, overexposure, etc. In addition, some users also encountered problems with the fingerprint reader or with subjectively slower charging. And that’s only in the latest update. However, we also have to remember that the first update arrived on the phone only in mid-February, i.e. only a month after we started testing the phone. The review of the phone was thus based on pre-production firmware, and this has never happened to South Koreans before. However, Samsung is certainly not alone in this.

Everyone is soaked in it

iPhone 15 again suffered from overheating, which was the result of a software bug that Apple patched in iOS 17.1. Some phones even had their display freeze from time to time, making it impossible to operate. Furthermore, the phones of the new series had problems with the stability of Wi-Fi, fast discharge, or perhaps with the quick launch of the camera, when you could see nothing but black-black darkness in the viewfinder.

With Pixels, the iron rule is that software (and often hardware) is not the same right from the start. The current eighth generation came with a fast-draining battery, overheating, or even random disconnection of the network connection. Only after a long time, when nothing arrived on your smartphone, you discovered that the phone has no access to both the mobile network and Wi-Fi. And the displays even had a problem with reactions to touches.

The demos looked great, but the final version of the Rabbit R1 only has a fraction of the promised features. And the ones he offers often work wonderfully

And then we have other progressive brands that want to find a place in the market, but are still struggling with it. The developers of the AI device Rabbit R1 hastened the start of its sales so that all the media attention did not go to Apple and its WWDC conference. However, this means that there is an incomplete device in the world, which the manufacturer is already starting to update regularly. Perhaps because the initial reviews were very bad. The device cannot respond to basic instructions, when translating from English to another language it leaves many words in their original form, or it does not know how to actually respond.

Yes, the update schedule is ambitious, but these are features that should have been in the device since its launch. The Rabbit R1 was supposed to be a smartphone killer, but instead it’s very slowly becoming just an interesting AI accessory. And it’s definitely not for everyone.

The Humane AI Pin is in a similar situation. The initial reviews were very bad. The developers promise to update the device regularly. But they already have the wrong foundation – the device overheats. And the manufacturers should figure this out before the sales start…

Humane AI Pin also had similar ambitions, whose initial reviews turned out to be disastrous. The manufacturer has thus outlined the main areas that it will improve in terms of software. It wants to focus on improving battery life, better temperature management, reducing device response time. But these are matters that the developers should have solved before they started offering it. Thanks to this, overheating occurs (reddened spots appear on the skin under the trick and shirt). The device also has unreliable gestures and low sound quality.

Don’t take our word for it, support for smart devices is very important. Timely updates as usual. Still, it seems that all manufacturers across the market are prioritizing speed to market over software updates. It adjusts on the fly, and it may take several months for these devices to receive functions or optimizations that you would expect from the start of sales, especially when looking at the purchase price.
