The US announced a successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile

The unarmed Minuteman III missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 01:13 local time (10:13 CEST) and flew approximately 6,760 kilometers over the Pacific before crashing into the sea near Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, the US Air Force said in a statement.

“This is a routine test and regular operation to demonstrate that the US nuclear deterrent system is safe, reliable and effective,” the statement said. “This type of test has been conducted more than three hundred times and has nothing to do with current world events,” the Air Force said.

We will test an intercontinental ballistic missile tomorrow, we have informed the Russians, the Pentagon said

The US does not usually announce intercontinental ballistic missile tests in advance, but a previous test of the Minuteman III missile, which can carry a nuclear warhead, was delayed twice due to international tensions. It was originally supposed to take place in April, but it was postponed in order not to increase the tension between the US and Russia less than two months after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Later, the test was postponed a second time due to tensions in the Taiwan Strait after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Finally, the test was successfully conducted on August 16.

According to the spokesperson of the Pentagon, it is a coincidence that both tests were carried out in such a short period of time, writes the AFP agency

The Minuteman III missile is capable of carrying several nuclear warheads, has a range of over 9,660 kilometers and a speed of up to 24,000 kilometers per hour. The manufacturer is Boeing, and the missile is a key part of America’s strategic arsenal.
