The transformation of the Morava River began in the south of Olomouc. U Hradisko is about to

In the south of Olomouc in the spring, the Morava Basin began the transformation of the Morava River. This stage of anti-flood measures is to ensure the protection of the Nový Svět and Nemilany neighborhoods. Olomouc is also dealing with the shape of Moravia in the northern part, where it has announced a landscape design competition. The deadline for submitting proposals for the first round has ended these days.

In the south of Olomouc, Povodí Morava started to improve the Morava River. Measures close to nature will protect the New World and Nemilany.

According to experts, fundamental modifications to the river in the south of the city will ensure revitalization of the river, restoration of the original river bed, reinforcement of spills into the river bed and connection of the shut-down arm on the left bank, where a pool will be created. Measures close to nature were used to transform the river from boredom. The result should be a capacitive trough with a meandering part.

“With regard to the amount of ecological elements that this building will bring, the location will continue to develop naturally and become a great potential for recreation for Olomouc residents,” pointed out the mayor of Olomouc, Miroslav Žbánek, at the opening of the stage marked IV. AND.

The construction site is already busy. Landscaping or summarization of the upper soil layer, which will subsequently be used for an earth dam and for modeling the right bank berm, is underway.

“We will follow this up with work on the re-laying of engineering networks and raising the dam along the wastewater treatment plant,” explained the progress of the works, General Director of Povodí Moravy Václav Gargulák.

The works are taking place along the Morava River in the section from the railway bridge to the road bridge connecting Nový Svět and Holica.

On the right bank, the gardeners’ colony had to give way to flood protection. According to experts, the winter flood at the end of 2023 only confirmed that the colony cannot be left out of the city’s flood protection solution – the water level was almost a meter in these places.

In addition to the anti-flood role, measures in the south of the city will also have landscape-forming potential.

“The revitalization of the dead arm is an example of river system restoration. Separately, without connection to flood protection, it was prepared already in 1997. But, paradoxically, it was the flood that ruined the implementation. Only now will it become a full-fledged part of the branch system of the river, it will be alive with the natural reproduction of fish species that do not have the conditions for reproduction in the main stream,” said Petr Loyka, head of the municipality’s environment.

Total investment costs represent 170 million crowns. The investor of the event, in which Olomouc participates, is Povodí Morava. Funding will be provided through a grant from the Environmental Operational Program. It should be completed in December 2025.

Recreational potential in the north

Olomouc is already preparing the transformation of the river and its immediate surroundings in the northern part of the city. The town hall announced a landscape design competition for it. Interested architects and landscapers have already inspected the terrain. The deadline for submitting proposals for the first round ends on Friday, April 26.

“The first phase of the competition should bring a conceptual solution, in the second phase there will be room for its more concrete elaboration,” explained Deputy for Strategy and Development Tomáš Pejpek.

The announcement of the competition has been prepared for a long time by the city and the investor Povodí Morava.

This stage of anti-flood measures is intended to protect Letná, Lazce, part of Hejčín, Černovír and the surroundings of Klášterní Hradisk.

The modifications will include not only the main stream, but also the confluence with the Trusovický stream and the closing dam. The proposal includes that between Černovír and Hejčín.

The transformation of the river in the north of Olomouc will also have recreational potential.

According to Povodí Morava, the current stages of protection against high water in Olomouc form the largest complex of flood protection measures in Moravia.

“All completed stages successfully combine natural and technical elements and have also won numerous awards. The third stage being prepared is the last part of the entire complex and I believe that, in addition to effective flood protection, it has immense potential to create an important element of ecological stability and social life from the river. The work with Morava in Olomouc has become a huge inspiration for other Czech cities,” highlighted Václav Gargulák, CEO of Povodí Morava.

Floodplain forests with enormous retention capacity and the meanders of the Morava River are essential for the flood protection of Olomouc, but also Litovla and smaller settlements in the vicinity. They played a key role in the last winter flood waves.

The winter floods also took care of a unique natural attraction: they tore through a meander on the Morava River under the Hynkovská bridge.

“Winter flood waves tore through a more than ten meter wide neck of the meander. The nearby Kenický meander, ruptured in 2012, had a neck only two meters wide. This created a new island, a new river bed and a sickle-shaped river pool in the place of the original flow,” the Administration of the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area informed about the unique phenomenon.
