A fun farewell, acting in the series and a trip to Greenland. Hradilek will not dissolve his bond

--

Why did you decide to call it quits after two of the four domestic nomination races? Even though you lost the chance to represent after the first two parts in Veltrusy…

I wanted to ideally say goodbye at the World Cup in Troja, Prague, but I knew that the nomination was difficult, there were only two places in it. I will still be going on the weekend and I would like to do my farewell as part of the inserted race at the Saint’s Day in Troy and then celebrate it there. The second thing is that I want the attention of the media and fans to be on the Olympic nomination this weekend, not on whether I’m quitting. The ending has been hanging over me for a few years and I don’t want to end from the couch. And now there’s no going back once you write it. (smile) My head and body feel lighter.

This has limited you in recent years, and this year you were also troubled by weakness in your hand.

It’s like when you walk, you can’t complete a step because of the weaker leg. Not because of pain, but you feel weak. Even when I lift children or garbage into the bin, my left hand is bad. It’s a nerve, regeneration is more difficult.

So how are you going to say goodbye?

Now this weekend I really want to race, not wave at people, even if it can change if I don’t pass the third gate… I will keep a calm head, the others are fighting for the national team and the Olympics, I will be happy if I get on the box at least once. There will also be international riders at the fair, with whom I have good relations, I would like to prepare some kind of exhibition, ideally funny, also with people outside the sport, such as actors. In short, something less serious.

Saying goodbye probably doesn’t mean you’ll never sit in a kayak again.

It’s the end of slalom racing, in the role of a professional athlete. But my relationship with the water is so intense that I will definitely not stop paddling, I will continue to go to the shipyard in Troy. But I won’t be a full-time slalomer. If there is ever a need for a member of the patrol, I will go there, or I will introduce myself next year in the Czech Cup. I do not leave the water, the bond with it will not be broken. When I started, I enjoyed training, but not because of winning races, this motivation came later. So looking forward to going back to it again. And if health permits, I would like to go to Norway for the extreme kayaking world championships, but that is more about lifestyle, I would also go with my family.

What will you do after your career?

The Poacher is sitting here with me (coach Miloš Říha) and our relationship was unique. He first gave me a boat and a paddle in the fall of 1996 and we are still together. Even the synergy in the group works great, we have an excellent relationship with Váša Chaloupka. But coaching doesn’t appeal to me, I have a lot of respect for coaches, but I wouldn’t want to do it as a job. I’ll be happy to help if I have time and need it, but to be responsible for when I’ll be at training and if I’ll set up the gates correctly? There is a trip to New Zealand to help with a smaller squad, but now I want to take the chance to give back time to my family until the kids go to school.

I fondly remember our beginnings together. A wonderful group of children and parents formed, it was far less about performance than it is today.

Do you still have unfulfilled dreams on the water?

For a long time, I want to go to Greenland, where kayaking was created for the livelihood of the Inuit, and I would like to process it into a documentary.

What show business? You acted in a movie, now also in a TV series, you danced in StarDance…

The series continues, I’ve been enjoying acting since I accidentally got the lead role in the movie. I have a filming schedule until the end of the year, I have intense experience from StarDance, the attention will be there for a while, so it is also a chance to make a positive impression on the public. Although I don’t really like the word show business.

What do you value most in your career?

When someone finishes, they show their medals. We moved, the children play with them, sometimes I only find a ribbon. I guess the time will come when I’m older. The Olympics was a dream, I’m grateful to have won a medal in London, it’s where you realize how many people watch the sport. But sportingly, gold from the World Cup is higher.
