The Americans had an excellent game, were more active in shooting and led 3:1 in the 34th minute. But then they paid the price for indiscipline and expulsion. Canada reduced the lead in the second period and turned the game around in the third period when Trevor Connelly was suspended for five minutes.
The Canadians punished a foul by one of the commemorators of last year’s American triumph with three goals. The Americans were still able to reduce the score, but during the power play McKenna decided on the win for the players from the cradle of hockey.
In the final, the 16-year-old striker overshadowed the most productive player of the tournament, James Hagens from the USA, who already in the semi-finals broke the historical points record of Nikita Kučerov of the World Cup of Russia from 2011. Hagens ended the championship with 22 points, McKenna set a new Canadian record with 20 points.
The Swedish hockey players were more successful in the game for bronze, who decided their victory with four goals in the third period. The Slovaks, who already knocked out the Czech team in the quarter-finals, were more active in shooting, but they could not overcome goalkeeper Lov Harenstam.
Sweden thus won a medal at the sixth U18 championship in a row. Last year was the second. Slovakia finished fourth, just like a year ago, having won a medal so far only in 1999 (bronze) and 2003 (silver).
