Sleeping for the athletes is already being prepared in the Olympic village. Custom-made mattresses are also built for frolicking

Preparations and accommodation arrangements for athletes in the Paris Olympic Village are slowly approaching the final stage. An important milestone was the installation of beds and the import of mattresses. However, they cannot be just any.

The organizers had to choose a supplier who could produce mattresses as per the requirements for the famous smart burner. In new beds, both downright heavy and tall people must sleep equally comfortably and well.

In recent days, therefore, a shipment of 16,000 specially made mattresses from Japan arrived on the outskirts of Paris. They are mattresses with three zones that adapt to the contours of the human body.

Mattresses tailored for everyone

“There are three blocks of air fibers inside the mattress. Each air fiber has a different strength on each side. For example, one surface is soft, the other mild and firm, or medium and extra firm. By changing these blocks, we adapt to each individual athlete,” explains Motokuni Takaoka of Airweave, the author of mattresses designed specifically for Olympians, in an interview with the AP agency.

Before the athletes are accommodated, each mattress will be adjusted exactly according to the needs of the specific lodger. Athletes send photos of their body shape to the app, and it calibrates what type of block they’ll need under their shoulders, what type under their hips, and which will be best for their feet.

The blocks are filled with non-toxic polyethylene so they don’t get attacked by bedbugs, they are also easy to move and reuse.

Even though they are made of cardboard, they can withstand any kind of rampage

The beds themselves are made of cardboard just like they were at the last Olympics in Tokyo. Each bed consists of several parts that first had to be assembled and then assembled as a kit. Then the already mentioned mattress came on the bed.

Beds and mattresses are produced by the same Japanese company, and after the reservations after the last Olympics that paper beds are only used for sleeping and nothing else, for example intimacy, the head of the company Takaoka left no one in doubt this time and stated that the material used definitely does not deprive the beds of any of their traditional functions.

Already last year, the Inside The Games website was able to report on how the Japanese director demonstrated the durability of the beds by jumping on them himself (in the video below at 0:20). “We designed the beds so that three to four people can jump on them at the same time, because we know that people rejoice after winning medals,” Takaoka explained the reasons for the increased durability of the beds with the proverbial Japanese tact.

The factory in Koto, Japan produced a total of 16,000 beds with mattresses. 12,000 are intended for athletes and another 4,000 for media representatives.

“The organizers asked us to make a sustainable bed for the Olympics. So we also designed a mattress for it – it’s easy to assemble and can be used for other purposes as well. They will be used by organizations such as the French Army, the Emmaüs organization, the Paris School of Opera and Ballet and the Tsuji Hospitality School,” concludes Takaoka.
