Australian tennis player and defeater of reigning champion Daniil Medvedev Nick Kyrgios did not make it to the semi-finals of the US Open. The 23rd player of the tournament lost a dramatic duel with Russian Karen Khačanov 5:7, 6:4, 5:7, 7:6, 4:6 after three hours and 41 minutes.
Olympic silver medalist from Tokyo Khačanov will next face fifth seed Casper Ruud, who defeated Italian Matteo Berrettini 6:1, 6:4, 7:6. The 23-year-old Norwegian still has a chance to become the new world number one after Medvedev.
In the women’s category, the first semi-final duo is Tunisian Uns Džábirová and French Caroline Garcia. The 28-year-old Džábirová defeated the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 6:4, 7:6 and is the first woman from African and Arab countries who in the so-called “open era” made it to the top four players of the tournament in New York. Garcia knocked out home American Cori Gauff 6-3, 6-4 and will make her Grand Slam semi-final debut.
Kyrgios was not enough for Khačanov for the second time in three matches. The finalist of this year’s Wimbledon surpassed his opponent in aces (31:30) and winning balls (75:63), but his defeat was decided at the beginning of the fifth set, when he lost his serve. The 26-year-old Russian held his serve until the end and will play his first Grand Slam semifinal.
The finalist of this year’s Roland Garros, Ruud beat Berrettini, three years older, in more than two and a half hours on the New York concrete. He became the first Norwegian in history to reach the semi-finals of the US Open. In the match, he lost his serve once, he “broke” his opponent five times. Not even 13 aces helped Berrettini.
“Having the opportunity to become world number one gives me a little more motivation. Of course, I would like to achieve that,” said Ruud in a post-match interview on the court.
The fifth player in the world, Džábirová, is fighting for her second Grand Slam final after this year’s Wimbledon. She beat Tomljanovic, who defeated Serena Williams bye from the 3rd round, in the number of winning balls 29:12.
“The fact that I can inspire other young players in Africa means a lot to me. I know that I have what it takes to win a Grand Slam,” said Džábirová.
Twenty-eight-year-old Garcia won her thirteenth match in a row, and in the last six she did not lose a set. The final defeater of Petra Kvitová from the general in Cincinnati played 24 winning balls in the duel with Gauff. She became the first Frenchwoman since Marion Bartoli in 2013 to reach the semi-finals of a Big Four tournament.
“Even though I was nervous, I tried to go for the winning shots. I’m looking forward to the next challenge and what I can achieve,” Garcia said.
The organizers of the US Open had to postpone a number of duels due to rain. Among them was the women’s doubles quarterfinal, in which Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková will challenge the Canadian-Mexican couple Gabriela Dabrowská and Giuliana Olmosová. The match will take place on Wednesday.
