Moscow – A Russian military plane crashed into the sea near Sevastopol in the annexed Crimea. The pilot ejected and rescuers picked him up from the sea, the Russian state agency RIA Novosti reported today, citing the local governor. A Russian Su-35 fighter jet fell into the sea, radio station Radio Svoboda reported on its Russian-language website, adding that the incident was filmed by eyewitnesses. The plane was on fire when it fell into the sea.

“Civilian objects were not damaged,” Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev said. According to him, the rescuers fished out the pilot about 200 meters from the shore, the pilot’s life is not in danger.

Neither Moscow nor Kyiv commented on the circumstances of the downing of the military plane. Russian war blogger Boris Rožin expressed the opinion on the social network that the plane could have become a victim of “friendly fire”, i.e. that it was shot down by Russian air defenses, or technical faults, or it was destroyed by a bird being sucked into the engine.

Sevastopol used to be the main base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet before Ukrainian air and sea attacks forced the Russian command to move the core of the fleet to other ports. Even so, Ukrainian forces claim that in recent attacks on Sevastopol using British-French Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles and Ukrainian-designed and manufactured Neptun anti-ship missiles, they have recently damaged at least three Russian amphibious ships used to supply troops fighting against Ukraine.
