Prague – The number of victims of traffic accidents in the Czech Republic this March was about a quarter lower than last year, 25 people died. The number of severely injured also decreased by a quarter. This is according to preliminary accident data on the police website. The most tragic day of the month was the last one – March 31, which this year fell on Easter Sunday. During it, four people died on Czech roads.
In March 2023, 34 people died in accidents in the country, nine fewer this year. There were 104 seriously injured last March, while this year 79. March thus brought the first year-on-year decrease in the number of accident victims this year. There were 40 deaths in January, the same as in January 2023, and in February the number of deaths increased by one compared to last February to 28.
At the end of March, the police recorded the most deaths in accidents in one day this month. Shortly after midnight on March 31, one person died in Brno when a car drove off the road to a construction site and crashed into a crosswalk. A forty-eight-year-old driver died in Pardubice when he crashed into a fence at low speed. In the evening, an 18-year-old female driver of a car died after hitting a tree on the road between Pobežovice and Mnichov in Domažlicko. The fourth victim was a motorcyclist who collided with a car in Havlíčkobrodsk on the I/34 road between Jitkov and Ždírec nad Doubravou in the evening.
Just like last year, there were several days with record temperatures in March this year. There were several motorcyclists among the victims of accidents in March, especially at the end of the month. For example, on March 26, a motorcyclist died on the D1 highway in Benešovsk after crashing into the center barriers when, according to the police, he did not adjust his speed to the road condition and his abilities.
