A driver under the influence of drugs was responsible for the death of two people. He goes to prison for four years

Brno – The regional court rejected the appeal of convicted Lukáš Beránek, who was responsible for a traffic accident in July 2022, as a result of which two people died. He caused the car accident under the influence of alcohol and psychotropic substances.

Twenty-eight-year-old Lukáš Beránek is sentenced to four years in prison for causing a car accident in which two people died. He will be placed in a secure prison and banned from driving for seven years. On Wednesday, April 24, judge JUDr. Josef Teplý rejected the appeal against the verdict, thus the conviction is final. Lukáš Beránek was driving under the influence of alcohol and the psychotropic substance ecstasy when he drove into the opposite direction in Popovice in July 2022 and crashed into an oncoming car. The driver succumbed to his injuries a few months later during continuous hospitalization and the woman died at the scene of the accident. According to the Regional Court, Báránek is thus guilty of manslaughter due to negligence.

The subject of the defendant’s appeal was, among other things, the claim that he was in a hypoglycemic state, i.e. a state in which blood sugar drops. The convict has been treated for type 1 diabetes since an early age, in which he should not use alcohol or psychotropic substances, according to the head doctor of the Diabetes Outpatient Clinic at St. Anna University Hospital, Petr Žák.

Symptoms of a hypoglycemic state include weakness, impaired fine motor skills and may even lead to unconsciousness. The Zlín rescue service, which intervened in the accident, refuted this claim and stated in the report that Beránek did not show signs of a hypoglycemic state even when he was taken to the emergency room.
