The price of used cars is falling, raids are increasing

Year-on-year, the offer of station wagons, SUVs and hatchbacks grew by up to 34%. On the contrary, there are 31% fewer small cars in advertising.

There are noticeably more five-year-old used cars on the market this March than last year. For example, the selection of station wagons is wider by 34%, hatchbacks by 25% and SUVs by 18%. However, they balance the generally more favorable price with a higher run-in. However, the trend does not apply to small hatchbacks, which are becoming scarce thanks to a 31% drop in supply. In the same way, ten-year-old used cars decreased year-on-year on the market.

In terms of percentage, the five-year-old Škoda Scala is the winner with an increase of 84%. At the opposite end of the scale is the Dacia Sandero, which was 49% less than a year ago in the March advertisement. This is according to a year-to-year comparison of the used index of the website TipCars.com. It compares the offer of the most popular used cars in the categories of station wagons, SUVs, hatchbacks and small cars.

“The index of the most popular used cars shows that five-year-old cars are increasing, while the position of ten-year-old cars is slightly weakening,” says Ing. Marek Knieža from TipCars.com. “The good news for those interested in buying a used vehicle is that the average price has decreased year-on-year across all categories. However, he has to put up with a higher number on the speedometer. A tip for sellers is small cars. Compared to last March, there are a third fewer of them on the market, but they have a third more mileage.”

Station wagons: Five- and ten-year-olds grew

Among five-year-old station wagons, there was a 34% year-on-year increase in ads. This is the largest gain among all the monitored categories of the Used Index. Compared to last March, the average price of popular family variants fell by almost 8% to an average of CZK 346,942.

On the contrary, the mileage is higher by 12,000 km, the March average is 119,863 km. The most offers were added compared to March 2023 for the Škoda Octavia model. The percentage increase was the most obvious for the station wagons Ford Focus, Hyundai i30 and Škoda Octavia. Only the Volkswagen Passat went into negative numbers with a value of -3.14%.

Among ten-year-old cars, station wagons are the only category that grew. The number of offers increased by 3.6% year-on-year. The imaginary winner was Octavia with a profit of 23.7%. By the same value, but in the negative, the Peugeot 308, on the other hand, was the only French station wagon that had a lower average mileage in March 2024 than last year.

SUV: People keep the old Duster at home, the new one is released to the world very used

The five-year SUV index showed an 18% year-on-year gain in the number of advertisements in March. The number one in growth was Hyundai Tucson with 69%, followed by Škoda Karoq (+40%) and Dacia Duster (+20%). The Romanian-French model also stands out with the biggest drop in price and increase in mileage. With values ​​of 320,349 CZK and 74,107 km, this is a change of 8.5%, or 64.7%.

Ten-year-old SUVs were on offer in March by 12.7% less than a year ago. Used Dacia Duster and Ford Kuga decreased the most, while the range of Hyundai Tucson models grew by 29%. The trio of these cars, on the other hand, held their price the best. This decreased year-on-year by almost 4% to 200 and 300 thousand crowns for Dacia and Ford, respectively. 380,000 CZK at Hyundai. The average for the category was minus 7%. The record holders were the Škoda Yeti and Kia Sportage models with a 10% loss.

Hatchbacks: Scala has more ads, but also mileage, Focus holds the price

The selection of five-year-old hatchbacks was 25% more varied year-on-year in March. The Škoda Scala model was the absolute record holder. It claimed the highest increase in advertisements (+84%) and the biggest decrease in price (-12%). The first was also in the area of ​​the reported raid.

The average value on the speedometer rose from last year’s 51,197 km to this year’s 86,419 km. That’s a change of 72% and an absolute record across the March Used Index. The notional winner of the category is the Hyundai i30, which kept its price around CZK 353,000 (+0.36%) despite a 45% increase in average mileage (newly 70,583 km).

Among the ten-year-old hatchbacks, there was a 7% year-on-year decrease in supply due to the decline of the Škoda Rapid, Kia Ceed and Hyundai i30 models. The 10-year-old Ford Focus is the second and last car in the March Used Car Index, where the average price change remained positive. By 2,000 CZK, or It rose by 1.1% to CZK 219,686.

Small cars: The supply is thin, the price is falling, the kilometers are increasing

The five-year small car index reflects the state of the new car market. New cars are more expensive and there are fewer of them. Owners keep them as used for a long time. Their offer decreased by 31% year-on-year. Although they had 31% more mileage, their price fell by less than 10% to an average of CZK 265,515.

Volkswagen Polo achieved the most kilometers year-on-year. Compared to March 2023, this year, with an average of 62,724 km, he had 51.5% more. Hyundai i20 had the smallest financial loss. Year-on-year, its price decreased by 0.5% to 248,427 CZK, but mileage increased by 32% to 59,250 km.

Small cars are the only category of the Used Cars Index where there are more ten-year-old cars on offer than five-year-old cars. But there is also a noticeable year-on-year decrease in advertisements – specifically 10%. On the contrary, the average price and kilometers were practically unchanged between March 2023 and 2024.
