What do eggs contain, why eat them and how much?
Eggs are among the basic and most consumed foods. They are eaten daily all over the world 1.4 billion. And why should we not neglect them in the menu? They contain a high amount of complete proteins (including all necessary amino acids in the most favorable ratio compared to other foods), in addition, they are highly digestible. You can find the complete composition of eggs in the table.
Eggs: composition |
easily digestible proteins |
vitamins D, E, K, A and group B (mainly B12) |
cholesterol |
fat |
minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, potassium, sulfur and chlorine) |
water |
Previously eating large amounts of eggs was considered a harmful habit. Allegedly due to the rapid increase in cholesterol and the risk of civilization diseases. For this reason, it was recommended to eat a maximum of three eggs per week.
However, thanks to several scientific studies and research, we now know that egg consumption has no effect on blood cholesterol levels or the risk of heart disease. We no longer have to worry about our health, as Monika Bartolomějová, the chief nutritional specialist of World Health, confirms for the online magazine Vitalia.cz. Today so a healthy person can eat one to three eggs a day. One average egg (size M) contains approx 72 to 80 kcal (calories).
Egg marking
Every egg producer must inform the consumer using a special code about the following data:
- number (0 to 3) – indicates the type of breeding (0 means ecological, 1 free range, 2 indoor breeding and 3 cage),
- Abbreviation of country of origin of eggs (e.g. CZ – Czech Republic, PL – Poland, DE – Germany, SK – Slovakia),
- other numbers characterize specific breeding (e.g. 7516 – Vejce CZ sro, Kunín).
Egg size
You can buy eggs in retail chains such as Penny Market, Lidl, Tesco or Kaufland according to their weight:
- S (small) – up to 53 grams/piece,
- M (medium) – from 53 to 63 grams/piece,
- L (large) – from 63 to 73 grams/piece,
- XL (extra large) – over 73 grams/piece.
Eggs: price per piece – How much do they normally cost?
At the end of last year, the average price was 3.70 crowns per egg. In January, however, the price went up at an average price of 4.63 crowns per piece. There can be several reasons – an increase in the price of eggs on the free European market, a lack of laying hens due to the worsening infection situation in Europe, but also a reduction in the number of laying hens during the winter months or pre-Christmas discounts.
