Russian returnees from the fighting in Ukraine are responsible for the lives of at least 107 people in Russia. Roughly another hundred were injured, the Russian investigative portal Vjorstka reported. According to his information, 175 Russian soldiers, including 91 former prisoners pardoned by Russian President Vladimir Putin, committed murder, assault and other crimes leading to the death or maiming of people.

Between 2022 and 2023, returnees from the war murdered 76 people. Another 18 people were seriously injured and died. Another 11 people died in traffic accidents they were responsible for. In two cases, former soldiers manipulated minors into using drugs, which led to the death of two children, the investigative portal calculated. Most of the murders among the returnees are ex-prisoners, who killed 44 people.

Relatives of former soldiers are often in mortal danger, the portal noted. According to him, many murders were also related to alcohol. “Veterans” often attacked and murdered acquaintances with whom they drank.

According to the previous conditions, Russian prisoners recruited to fight had to serve six months at the front, after which they were released. The media pointed out that people who had been convicted of brutal murders often found themselves at large, which caused outrage among the survivors. Newly, however, prisoners are often sent to fight until the end of the so-called special military operation, which is Russia’s official designation for the war in Ukraine, the BBC reported in January in its Russian-language edition.
