Trade unionists called a demonstration against the labor code and the pension reform

--

“After the Velvet Revolution, we stepped in a direction that was supposed to bring us closer to the developed countries of Europe. Today we are witnessing how the government is leading us in the opposite direction,” the trade unionists wrote on social networks, where they reported on the demonstration.

The upcoming protests, for which trade unionists have reported about two thousand participants, are to be held at the Chamber of Deputies, where the next meeting will begin on May 21. The pension reform and the labor code could already be discussed at it.

Until then, however, according to the chairman of ČMKOS Josef Středula, the government should reconsider its position and sit at the same table with the trade unions. “There is room for negotiation even in a situation where a protest action is called,” he said. He assumes that the opposition parties, which also oppose the reforms, will support the trade unionists at the demonstration. “This is a ČMKOS event and I believe that other entities and individuals will also join,” he said.

The trade unionists are annoyed by the shortening of the notice period, the cancellation of guaranteed wages, the extension of the probationary period or dismissal without reason, which should be brought about by the new Labor Code, but also the extension of the retirement age, which in turn is envisaged by the pension reform.

According to trade unionists, the extension of the probationary period, which is envisaged by the new Labor Code of Minister Marian Jurečka (KDU-ČSL), will increase the insecurity of the workers, and according to them, the shortening of the notice period will deprive employees of time to find a new job.

The unions also do not like Jurečko’s pension reform proposal, which introduces a postponement of the retirement age. “It is unacceptable for the retirement age to increase indefinitely. Also because in Czech society the healthy life expectancy is just over 61 years old,” the unions add.

The ODS and TOP 09 want to incorporate dismissal without reason into the Labor Code in the form of an amendment proposal, despite the opposition of Jurečka and the entire KDU-ČSL. The matter therefore became a subject of contention even in the governing coalition.

“Such a measure does not help anyone and can harm many,” the unions say. “It is inadmissible for the Labor Code to open the door to discrimination,” they noted.
