Grammy Award-winning Christian singer Mandisa Lynn Hundley, a former Lifeway Christian Resources employee and American Idol contestant, was found dead at her home in Nashville on Thursday.

The cause of death was not given.

“We can confirm that Mandisa was found dead in her home yesterday. We do not know the cause of death or any other details at this time,” according to Christianity Today, in an official announcement posted on April 19 on the official account of the X artist known as Mandisa.

“We ask for your prayers for her family and close circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

Before finishing ninth in the fifth season of American Idol in 2005, Mandisa worked for Lifeway as a telephone customer service representative from 2000 to 2003, Lifeway told Baptist Press.

She worked with the Lifeway Women’s Ministry team, performed and led praises at some events, and later spoke at Living Proof Live conferences.

“Our team at Lifeway is devastated by the news of the passing of our friend and former colleague,” Lifeway CEO Ben Mandrell told Baptist Press. “Her teammates remember the joy and kindness she brought to work every day. Our heartfelt prayers are with her family.”

Lakisha Mitchell, the late wife of Baptist pastor Breonus Mitchell, inspired Mandisa’s hit “Overcomer,” the title track of the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Album. Breonus Mitchell, pastor of Mount Gilead Baptist Church in Hermitage, Tennessee, remarried in 2018.

“We are of course saddened by her passing,” he told Baptist Press. “Mandisa was just a bright light, a bright witness. She was true to her faith, even when she was dealing with depression, she just bounced back from the bottom. And I think the song ‘Overcomer’ and her work just embodies her life, how she was a great overcomer of many problems.”

Christianity Today magazine adds that Lakisha’s death from breast cancer in 2014 after the album’s success caused Mandisa to fall into a deep and prolonged depression.
