Ostrava – One person died today and two others were injured in an accident involving two trucks and one passenger car on the D1 highway between Bohumín in Karvina and the Polish border. An air rescue helicopter was also on the scene. Traffic on the highway is stopped in the direction of Poland. Moravian-Silesian police spokeswoman Eva Michalíková informed ČTK about the accident.
The accident happened after 08:35. According to the available information, a tractor carrying a historic tank for a demonstration event in Karvinsko first stopped at the roadside, then a car stopped behind it. A truck with a semi-trailer, which was transporting cars, then crashed into the passenger car. “We can confirm the death of one person and the serious injury of another,” said Michalíková. She later added that there were two injuries. Police will not release further information until next of kin have been notified.
“The rescuers could no longer help one person who remained wedged in the crashed car, and the doctor had to declare her dead,” said the spokesman for the Moravian-Silesian rescuers, Lukáš Humpl. The injured middle-aged man had to be freed by firefighters. He showed signs of impaired consciousness and a state of shock, his life was in direct danger. He suffered multiple injuries. Rescuers put him into artificial sleep, secured his airway and switched him to machine-controlled ventilation. He was transported by air to the Ostrava University Hospital. Humpl added that the ambulance also transported another middle-aged man with a slight leg injury to the same medical facility.
Fire department spokeswoman Kamila Langer said that three fire departments responded to the scene of the accident. They took care of rescuing a man from a car wreck. They also stopped the leakage of operating fluids from crashed cars.
