The Czech Republic is hardening. Ukraine wants to get 1.5 million artillery shells

--

“We can do much more than the initially announced number (of artillery shells),” Lipavsky told Bloomberg, specifying the possible volume of artillery shells delivered in the future to 1.5 million.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) stated at the end of March that he had already managed to raise money for the purchase of the first delivery of 300,000 artillery shells for Ukraine.

“So far, we have managed to collect enough money to buy the first delivery of 300,000 artillery shells,” the prime minister said on the X network, adding that the aid does not end and the aim of the Czech initiative “is much more”. The Bloomberg agency reported that the first deliveries of ammunition to Ukraine will still take several weeks.

In response, however, Lipavský stated that the ammunition provided by the Czech Republic can already be positively seen on the battlefield, even if it has not yet arrived to the Ukrainians.

“As we can see, it already helps Ukraine to fight better, because they know that they will have a supply of fresh ammunition, which has changed their view on the use of existing stocks,” said the head of Czech diplomacy.

In the interview, Lipavský refused to say how long the deliveries to the front line would take. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in early March that supplies would arrive in the “foreseeable future” rather than months, according to another Bloomberg report.

Czech initiative

President Petr Pavel stated at the Munich Security Conference that the Czech Republic managed to find up to 800,000 pieces of artillery ammunition around the world, which could reach Ukraine in a matter of weeks.

“We identified half a million pieces of 155-millimeter ammunition and three hundred thousand pieces of 122-millimeter ammunition,” Pavel said. At the beginning of February, the newspaper Politico reported that the Czech Republic was interested in ammunition from arms companies in, for example, South Korea, Turkey, or the Republic of South Africa, which the Unian agency now described as a masterful example of a psychological operation.

About twenty countries have joined the purchase so far, from Canada to Germany, Lithuania, Finland or the Netherlands and Luxembourg to Poland. Lipavský told journalists in Brussels a week ago that Prague has so far received funds from its allies for the purchase of the first 300,000 units and another 500,000 is under negotiation.
